Why illegal betting needs other people’s accounts

Illegal online gambling operators cannot use banks openly. If they ran bets and winnings through accounts in their own names, they would be easier to catch.

So they may use ordinary people’s accounts. The operator stays hidden, and the person whose name is on the account is the one investigators find.

How bets and winnings pass through you

Players send their bets into one account, and winners are paid from another. Operators need a steady supply of these accounts, so they recruit people to sit in the middle.

That middle position is the mule role. Gambling money passes through your account, and that flow is exactly what police and banks look for.

It can grow quietly. A few deposits become a steady stream, and once anyone reads your statements, the pattern stands out.

The “rent your account” offer

The usual pitch is simple: let the operator use your account for a monthly fee or a cut. It is sold as easy money for doing nothing.

It is not safe. Giving control of your own account to someone else without lawful authority or lawful purpose is the act in Penal Code section 424B: a fine of RM10,000 to RM100,000, or 1 to 7 years jail, or both [f2].

The fee can be small next to a criminal charge, a frozen account and a bank record that follows you. The risk falls on you, not the operator.

Acting as an agent is more serious

Some people go further and act as agents, taking bets and paying out winnings through their own accounts. That is not lending an account; it is running the money.

Carrying out transactions through an account without a lawful purpose is the act in section 424C. It carries 3 to 10 years jail, or a fine of RM10,000 to RM150,000, or both [f1].

Agents may be paid commission on turnover. The more money you handle, the harder it is to say your role was small or accidental.

Why these accounts are frozen quickly

Gambling operations can draw raids and complaints, and the money trail runs through the accounts they used. When police act, those accounts can be frozen and the holders identified [f4].

Your account may then show on Semak Mule, the police website where anyone can check if an account is flagged as a mule. The fact that the players were real does not make the operation legal [f3].

What to do if your account was used

Stop moving money and delete nothing. Keep your chats, the payment records and any rental agreement or arrangement.

Check your account on the Semak Mule portal, and report to 997 if you were also cheated [f3] [f4]. Speak to a lawyer before giving a detailed statement. A lawyer can help you explain what you knew and did, instead of guessing under pressure.

I only rented out my account for betting deposits. Is that a crime?

Letting a gambling operator use your account means giving up control of it. Giving up control without lawful authority or lawful purpose is the act in Penal Code section 424B: a fine of RM10,000 to RM100,000, or 1 to 7 years jail, or both [f2]. The rent does not make it lawful, and if you moved bets and winnings yourself, section 424C can apply [f1].

I acted as an agent taking bets and paying winnings. How serious is that?

Running bets and payouts through your account is carrying out transactions yourself, the act in section 424C. It carries 3 to 10 years jail, or a fine of RM10,000 to RM150,000, or both [f1]. Keep every record of what you handled, and get advice before you explain your role in a statement.

The winners were real players, not scam victims. Does that matter?

It can affect the case, but illegal gambling money is still money from unlawful activity, so your account can still be frozen and traced [f3]. What you knew and what you did with the money are the key questions. Keep your records and get advice before giving a statement.

My account is frozen after a gambling raid. What now?

Stop moving money and delete nothing. Keep your chats with the operator, the payment records and any agreement, and check your account on the Semak Mule portal [f3]. If you were also cheated, report it to the 997 hotline, and speak to a lawyer before giving a detailed police statement [f4].
