A frozen account puts pressure on your money straight away. So you need to know what legal help costs before you decide what to do. Getting a freeze varied or lifted can cost less than defending a criminal charge.

This guide gives the published fee ranges we could find. [f1] They come from Malaysian fee guides, not fixed scales. Your real cost depends on your case, so ask any lawyer you see for a written estimate.

First consultation fee

Consultation fees vary by firm [f5]. Ask the lawyer to confirm the fee before the meeting starts. Some lawyers deduct it from their later fee if you hire them.

In the meeting, the lawyer reads your freeze notice and documents and explains your options. The lawyer should tell you whether you need a simple application or a full defence.

Bring your bank statements, the freeze notice if you received one, and any letters from the police or bank. The more you bring, the more accurate the lawyer’s advice will be.

Cost of applying to vary the freeze

If your account is frozen but you have not been charged, a lawyer can apply to “vary” the freeze. That means asking for some or all of your money to be released. For an AMLA enforcement agency freeze, this is a written application to the agency itself. [f4]

A police freeze under Criminal Procedure Code section 116D is different. It is varied through a Sessions Court instead.

We found no published fee for variation work, so ask for a written quote. The cost depends on how many accounts are frozen and how much proof of clean funds is needed. A simple application with clear documents should cost less than a complex one.

Cost of defending an AMLA charge

If you are charged under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, the cost rises sharply. [f3] One Malaysian firm’s 2026 guide puts criminal defence at about RM3,000 to RM15,000 in the Magistrates’ Court and RM10,000 to RM50,000 for a Sessions Court trial. [f5] Serious charges heard in the High Court can cost more.

This fee covers preparing the case, reviewing evidence, attending court, handling witnesses and making legal arguments. A full trial with many hearing dates sits at the higher end. Ask your lawyer how many court dates to expect and what each stage costs.

Why frozen account cases can cost less

Frozen account cases can cost less than mule account criminal defence. Some involve only an application, not a criminal trial. If someone else’s activity caused the freeze and you are not a suspect, the work may only be proving your money is clean.

Costs go up if you are charged, if accounts at several banks are frozen, or if the investigation widens. A simple freeze can turn into a criminal case. Early advice helps you respond properly from the start.

What your lawyer does for you

On a frozen account case, the lawyer contacts the bank to find out what was frozen and why. They also deal with the investigating officer and show where your money came from.

If an application to vary the freeze is needed, the lawyer prepares it with supporting evidence. They file it with the right body: the enforcement agency for an AMLA freeze, or a Sessions Court for a section 116D police freeze.

They also explain how long the freeze may last and what can speed things up. If you are questioned, they protect your rights.

The Legal Aid Department (Jabatan Bantuan Guaman) may give help at low or no cost if your income is within its limits. [f2] An approved application costs at least RM10 to register, and full aid applies if your yearly financial resources are RM50,000 or less. [f6]

You can apply at a JBG branch. Ask whether it can help with your matter about an account freeze.

The Bar Council also runs legal aid centres. If cost is a problem, try these first. See finding legal help for the full list.

Paying in stages

Some lawyers let you pay for frozen account work in stages, for example the consultation fee first, then a fee for the variation application. Trial fees are agreed separately if you are charged later.

Ask whether the fee is fixed or hourly. A fixed fee for a variation application tells you the full cost upfront. Criminal defence may be billed by the hour.

Always get the fee terms in writing. They should say what happens if the case grows.

What it can cost to do nothing

Going without a lawyer has its own cost. A frozen account can stop you paying bills, servicing loans or running a business. Without advice, you may miss a deadline for a variation application, or say something to investigators that hurts your case.

Early help can cost less than waiting, because a problem handled early may not grow. Read what to do now so you arrive at your first meeting prepared.

How much does it cost to unfreeze a bank account through a lawyer?

We found no published fee for this work, so ask the lawyer for a written quote. For an AMLA enforcement agency freeze, the request to vary it is a written application to the agency, not a court case [f4]. That is usually far less work than a trial. The cost depends on how many accounts are frozen and how much proof of clean funds is needed.

Is a frozen account case cheaper than a criminal defence case?

It can be. Some frozen account cases only need an application to vary or lift the freeze, with no criminal charge. If you are charged, one Malaysian firm's 2026 guide puts defence at about RM3,000 to RM15,000 in the Magistrates' Court and RM10,000 to RM50,000 for a Sessions Court trial [f5]. These are published ranges, not fixed fees.

Can I get free legal help for a frozen account?

The Legal Aid Department (JBG) helps Malaysians who pass its income test. An approved application costs at least RM10 to register, and full aid applies if your yearly financial resources are RM50,000 or less [f6]. Some people may also get help from the Bar Council's legal aid centres.

What does a lawyer actually do for a frozen account case?

The lawyer deals with the bank and the investigating officer for you. They collect proof that your money is clean, prepare an application to vary the freeze if needed, and act for you if the case goes to court. They also tell you your rights and how long each step usually takes.

Do I need a lawyer if my account is frozen but I have not been charged?

Advice still helps before any charge. A lawyer can help you answer the investigation properly, apply to release money for essential expenses, and protect your rights. Acting early also helps you meet deadlines and time limits.
