What this checklist is for
A frozen account can turn on one question: where did this money come from? If you can show that each deposit came from an ordinary, lawful source, you help answer the suspicion behind the freeze. The documents below are the ones that answer that question.
Work through it slowly. Gather originals or clear copies, keep them together, and label each one with its date and what it shows.
Income documents
Start with proof of what you earn. Collect your latest payslips, an employment letter, and your EPF and SOCSO statements if you have them. These tie your salary deposits to a real job.
If you are self-employed or run a small business, gather invoices, order records and any registration papers. For a stall or online shop, screenshots of sales and platform payout records help. Aim to match each regular deposit to a source of income.
Bank and transaction records
Pull full bank statements for the period before and around the freeze. Highlight the deposits being questioned and note what each one was. Your bank statement evidence is the backbone of the whole file.
For transfers between your own accounts, print the records from both sides so the movement is clear. Matching two statements helps remove the impression that money appeared from nowhere.
Documents for one-off or large amounts
Large or unusual deposits can draw attention, so document them carefully. For a loan, keep the agreement and the lender’s transfer record. For a gift, a wedding contribution or family support, keep any message, note or acknowledgement.
For a property sale, an inheritance or an insurance payout, keep the sale and purchase agreement, the estate papers or the insurer’s letter. Each one helps turn a suspicious lump sum into an explained event on your timeline.
Why each document counts twice
Your documents do two jobs. First, they answer the investigation directly. Second, they support a request to release funds.
Under section 44A of AMLA, you can apply in writing to the enforcement agency to vary a freeze for reasonable living or business expenses [f1]. Proof of income and spending is exactly what that application needs.
Time matters too. An AMLA order under section 52A lapses after 18 months if you are not charged in that time [f2]. A strong file helps you answer questions early instead of waiting.
Getting help with the file
You do not have to present this alone. The Malaysian Bar Council publishes guidance on solicitor-client costs and professional conduct, so you can ask about fees before you commit [f3]. If cost worries you, the Legal Aid Department may help people who meet its income limits at low or no cost [f4].
Bring your documents to that first conversation. A lawyer can tell you which items carry the most weight and how to present them safely.

Why does source of funds matter so much?
A freeze can rest on suspicion that the money is linked to unlawful activity. Papers showing salary, sales, a loan or a gift can answer that suspicion. When you can trace each deposit to an ordinary source, your lawyer has something concrete to use in asking for release or answering police questions.
What if I do not have receipts for everything?
Gather what you can and note the gaps honestly. Bank records, payslips and messages can fill in what receipts miss. For older or cash transactions, a written explanation with any partial proof still helps. Never make anything up. An honest gap is far safer than an invented document.
Can I get some money released while the freeze continues?
It may be possible. Under section 44A of AMLA, you can apply in writing to the enforcement agency that froze the account, to vary the freeze for reasonable living or business expenses [f1]. Your income and spending papers support that request. A lawyer can prepare it and explain what the agency will expect to see.
Should I hand this checklist to the police myself?
Prepare the documents, but get legal advice before you hand over anything. Papers that help in a lawyer's hands can be misread if given directly and without context. Your lawyer decides the order, wording and timing, so that your real explanation lands clearly and does not raise new questions.
