What does mule account defence cost?

If you are being investigated or charged over a mule account (a bank account used to move scam money), legal fees are likely one of your first worries. The cost depends on the stage of your case, how complex it is and which lawyer you choose. The ranges below come from published fee guides.

They are guides only, not fixed scales or quotes from any firm. Knowing how fees are set up also helps you compare quotes from different lawyers. [f1]

Consultation fees

Consultation fees depend on the firm. Published guides put criminal work billed by the hour at about RM200 to RM500 an hour [f6].

At this meeting, the lawyer reads your documents, hears what happened and gives early advice. Some lawyers count the consultation fee toward the retainer (the upfront fee) if you hire them.

The first meeting tells you whether your case is simple or complex. The lawyer can explain which laws apply and what the process is likely to be. Bring every relevant document, including your bank statements and any police reports.

Costs at the investigation stage

If no charge has been filed yet, you may pay a retainer that covers the lawyer’s contact with the investigating officer (IO), help preparing for questioning, and advice on your rights.

Legal help at this stage can influence whether a charge is filed. [f4] A lawyer who speaks to the IO early may be able to put your evidence in front of the officer.

Fees if your case goes to trial

If you are charged, one Malaysian firm’s 2026 guide puts criminal defence at about RM3,000 to RM15,000 in the Magistrates’ Court. It puts a Sessions Court trial at about RM10,000 to RM50,000, and a bail application at about RM2,000 to RM8,000. [f5] [f3]

Trial work includes preparing the defence, cross-examining witnesses, checking the prosecution’s evidence and going to court many times.

The final amount depends on how many trial days are needed. A case with one charge and clear facts may finish sooner. Cases with several accounts, large sums or other accused people take longer and cost more.

What affects your total cost

The number of charges matters most, because each charge needs its own preparation. The court also matters: High Court cases cost more than Magistrate Court cases.

The amount of evidence counts too. If police took several devices, or your case has thousands of transactions, checking the documents takes longer. The lawyer’s experience and location also play a part, since KL firms may charge differently from firms in smaller towns.

The Legal Aid Department (Jabatan Bantuan Guaman, JBG) may give legal help at low or no cost if you meet its income rules. [f2] You can apply at any JBG branch. Ask JBG whether it can take a criminal case about mule accounts.

The Bar Council also runs legal aid centres, so ask whether one can help with a criminal matter. If you cannot afford a private lawyer, look into these options early, not on the week of your court date. See finding legal help for more options.

Payment plans and fee types

Some lawyers accept payment in stages. One plan is to pay the consultation fee, then a retainer for the investigation stage, then agree trial fees separately if you are charged. This spreads the cost over several months.

Ask whether the fee is fixed or by the hour.

A fixed fee tells you the cost in advance. Hourly billing can be cheaper for a simple case but hard to predict for a complex one. Get the fee agreement in writing before you go ahead.

Questions to ask about fees

At your first meeting, ask:

  • What does the retainer cover?
  • Are court filing fees, travel and photocopying charged separately?
  • What happens if the case takes longer than expected?
  • Will I be charged for phone calls and emails?

Also ask about the lawyer’s experience with mule account cases. A lawyer who knows these cases can estimate the cost more accurately. Ask for references if you can.

Why early help can cost less

Hiring a lawyer during the investigation may cost less than paying for a full trial, because each hearing date adds to the bill.

Waiting also costs you in other ways: a frozen account, possible trouble at work, and stress. Read what to do now for your first steps.

How much does a first consultation for a mule account case cost?

It depends on the firm. Published guides put criminal work billed by the hour at about RM200 to RM500 an hour [f6]. Ask the lawyer to confirm any consultation fee before you start. The first session may cover your situation, early advice on where you stand, and the next steps.

Can I get legal aid for a mule account charge?

Possibly, if you qualify. The Legal Aid Department (Jabatan Bantuan Guaman, JBG) helps Malaysians who pass its means test. Registration costs at least RM10 for an approved application, and full aid applies if your yearly financial resources are RM50,000 or less [f7]. You can apply at any JBG office.

Why are some mule account cases more expensive than others?

Cost depends on how many charges you face, how many bank accounts are involved, and whether the case goes to trial. Cases with many transactions need more document review. Each extra charge also needs its own preparation.

Do lawyers offer payment plans for criminal defence?

Some lawyers agree to payment in stages. You might pay the consultation fee first, then a retainer (an upfront fee) for the investigation stage, then more if the case goes to trial. Talk about payment early so there are no surprises.

What should I ask about fees at my first meeting with a lawyer?

Ask for a written fee estimate for each stage of your case. Ask what the retainer covers, whether court filing fees are extra, and what happens if the case takes longer than expected. Get a clear breakdown before you agree.
