How much does a lawyer cost?
There is no single fixed price. The fee depends on how complex your case turns out to be. A short advice session costs far less than a full defence in court.
Fees mostly reflect how much work is involved. The Malaysian Bar Council publishes guidance on lawyers’ fees and professional conduct [f1].
What makes the fee higher or lower
The main factors are how far your case has gone, the amounts involved, and whether you have been charged. Mule-account cases can involve Penal Code sections 424A, 424B or 424C, which differ in how serious they are [f3]. A more serious charge can need more preparation.
The number of accounts, the amount of bank records and the number of court dates also add to the cost. Always ask for the fees in writing.
If money is tight
You still have options if you cannot afford a private lawyer. The Legal Aid Department may give help at low or no cost to people whose income qualifies [f2].
Even one early meeting with a lawyer can be worth it, because it helps you avoid mistakes during the investigation. Ask whether payment in instalments is possible.
What to ask before you agree
Ask exactly what the quoted fee covers. Some fees cover only the first meeting. Others include follow-up letters, going with you to the police station, or a set number of court dates.
Ask whether costs such as court filing fees or travel are charged on top. Also ask how the fee changes if the case grows, for example from an investigation to a charge.
If the case later needs more work than expected, ask for the extra charges in writing before you agree to them. It is normal to compare two or three lawyers before choosing one.

Why can't a lawyer quote a fixed price upfront?
Because nobody knows how much work is needed until the facts are clear. One advice session is very different from defending a charge in court for months. A lawyer can explain how they charge and give an estimate once they understand your case.
What makes a case more expensive?
Larger amounts, several accounts, an actual charge, court appearances and a lot of documents all add work. A case still at the statement stage can cost less than a trial. Ask for the fees in writing so nothing surprises you later.
Is there help if I genuinely cannot pay?
Yes. The Legal Aid Department helps people whose income is low enough to qualify. You can also ask a lawyer whether they take pro bono (unpaid) work. Early advice, even a short session, can help you avoid mistakes during the investigation.
