How do people find out their account is frozen?

Maybe your card was declined at the till, and for a second you thought it was your mistake. Maybe your banking app showed “suspended” where your balance should be. Maybe your salary simply never arrived.

However you found out, it is normal to feel shaken. This page is for that moment, before you know why it happened, how long it will last or what to do.

What do people do in the first hour, and what helps more?

It is easy to call the bank hotline again and again, hoping for a different answer. Some tell no one, sure they must have done something wrong. Others assume the worst and cannot think straight for the rest of the day.

That is what panic does, and it is nothing to be ashamed of. A more useful first hour looks like this: check your app for any message and note the time you noticed. Call the bank once for a reference number, then stop and plan your next step.

What does a frozen account mean?

A freeze is not always the worst case, and it does not always mean you are suspected of anything. It means an authority, or your bank, has restricted the account while something is checked or investigated.

The freeze can come from different places. The Public Prosecutor can order one under AMLA Section 50(1) if an account is suspected of holding money from unlawful activity. [f1]

Under the 2024 amendments, police can also freeze an account directly under CPC Section 116D, with no court order. An officer of Sergeant rank or above only needs to suspect a link to illegal activity. [f4]

What else can cause a freeze?

Banks can also restrict an account themselves under their own anti-money laundering duties, often after spotting unusual transactions. [f5] A court can also order a freeze as part of a separate civil or criminal case, even if the account holder did nothing wrong.

Mule accounts are one reason accounts get frozen: police detected 46,048 of them in 2023 and 50,295 in 2024. [f6] If your freeze is linked to one, our mule account page explains the everyday situations that can lead there.

How long could the freeze last?

It depends on who ordered it, so that is one of the first things to find out. An AMLA Section 44 freeze lapses after 90 days unless you are charged, and a Section 50 order lapses under Section 52A if no one is charged within 18 months. [f2]

A police freeze under Section 116D lapses after 18 months if no prosecution is started. [f4] A hold placed by the bank itself depends on the bank’s own review. Once you know which one applies, our freeze duration guide explains each in more detail.

Can you get any money released now?

If an enforcement agency froze your account under AMLA Section 44, Section 44A lets you apply in writing to that agency to vary the order. That can release money for reasonable living or business expenses. [f3] A lawyer can prepare the application with proof of your real monthly costs, such as rent and essential bills.

A lawyer can start this application while the reason for the freeze is still being worked out.

What should you do once you have calmed down?

Gather the basics: roughly when it happened, what the app or bank told you, and any reference number. A short WhatsApp message with those details is enough to start.

If the bank is slow or vague, a lawyer can raise the matter through BNMLINK. [f5] For the full list of authorities that can freeze an account, see our main frozen account lawyer page.

My card just got declined at the till and I had no warning. What is happening?

Some people find out about a freeze this way, with no letter or call first. It can mean an authority or the bank has restricted the account. You will not know which one until you check, and a lawyer can help you find out quickly.

My salary didn't land on payday. Could this be a freeze?

Yes, it could. A missing salary can be a first sign. Check your banking app for a suspension notice, then call the bank and ask for a reference number. If the bank cannot explain, a lawyer can make formal enquiries for you.

Should I just wait a few days in case it's a system glitch?

Checking your app and calling the bank once is sensible. But if the bank says it is not a technical error, waiting longer can leave you less time to respond. Our [first hour actions guide](/first-hour-actions/) lists what to check first.

I called the bank and they won't tell me anything. What now?

Banks may not be able to say much on the phone, especially about police or AMLA freezes. A lawyer can ask directly and, if the bank's own review is the problem, raise it through BNMLINK. [f5]

Can I get any money released while I figure out what happened?

If an enforcement agency froze the account under AMLA Section 44, Section 44A lets you apply in writing to that agency to release money for reasonable living expenses. [f3] A lawyer prepares the application with proof of your real monthly costs. It can be useful to do right away.

Is this only about mule accounts, or does it cover other freezes too?

This page covers the first shock, whatever caused the freeze: AMLA, police, the bank itself or a court order. If your case turns out to involve a mule account, our [mule account lawyer page](/peguam-akaun-keldai/) goes into that.
