Who is this page for?

Your account is frozen and you want to know two things: who froze it, and what can be done. This page is the starting point whether it involves a mule account, a wider money laundering investigation, a bank compliance hold, or something else.

It applies if you did nothing wrong, or if your account was used before you understood the risk. It also applies if you have already been arrested or charged. The authority involved and the right next step depend on the details. A lawyer can help you work those out quickly.

Who can freeze an account?

There are several possible sources, and the one behind your freeze decides what a lawyer can do.

An enforcement agency such as the police can freeze under AMLA Section 44 for up to 90 days. The Public Prosecutor can order a freeze under AMLA Section 50(1) on accounts suspected of holding money from crime. [f1] The police, since the 2024 amendment, can freeze an account under CPC Section 116D, with no court order first. The officer must be of Sergeant rank or above and suspect a link to crime. [f4]

A bank can restrict an account under its own anti-money laundering duties. [f5] A court can also order a freeze as part of civil or criminal proceedings.

How long can a freeze last?

It depends on who issued it, which is one of the first things a lawyer checks.

An AMLA Section 44 freeze lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged. A Section 50 order or seizure lapses after 18 months if no charge is filed or no prosecution starts (Section 52A). [f2] A police freeze under Section 116D also lapses after 18 months without a charge; before that, its length depends on the investigation.

Holds the bank places itself vary by bank and have no fixed limit. Our freeze duration guide sets this out authority by authority.

Can you get money released while frozen?

A freeze does not always cut you off from all your money. Under AMLA Section 44A, you can apply in writing to the enforcement agency to vary the freeze order so money is released for reasonable living or business expenses. [f3]

A lawyer prepares this application with proof of your real monthly needs, such as rent and utilities, or payroll and supplier bills for a business account. It is one of the most practical first steps a lawyer can take for you.

How common are mule account cases?

Mule accounts are a large enforcement area for police: they detected 46,048 in 2023 and 50,295 in 2024. [f6] Some of the account holders did not knowingly commit a crime.

If your freeze comes from a mule account concern, our mule account lawyer page explains Sections 424A, 424B and 424C. Our Kuala Lumpur page covers cases in the Klang Valley.

What does a lawyer do first?

The lawyer’s first job is to find out which authority froze your account and confirm it with the bank or that body, because account holders may not be told clearly. Then the lawyer explains your realistic options: a variation application, a formal enquiry, or preparing for a longer investigation.

If it is only your bank’s own hold and the bank is not responding properly, a lawyer can advise on escalating through BNMLINK. [f5]

How the WhatsApp enquiry works

Send a short message with what you know: which bank, roughly when the freeze happened, and anything the bank or an authority has told you. You do not need all the details first.

We use your message to refer you to a lawyer, who can then explain your likely position and next steps. For how freezes work in general, read our guide to understanding account freezes.

Anywhere in Malaysia

This is not limited to Kuala Lumpur. Frozen account cases are handled wherever the bank branch, police station or court is, from Penang to Johor Bahru to Kota Kinabalu. The WhatsApp process is the same wherever you are.

If you have a letter or app notice about the freeze, a lawyer can use it to identify the authority and tell you whether a release application is possible.

How do I find out which authority froze my account?

Start with your bank. Ask for the reference number and the name of the authority behind the freeze: the Public Prosecutor under AMLA, the police under CPC Section 116D, a court, or the bank's own checks. If the bank is vague, a lawyer can make formal enquiries for you.

Is a bank freeze the same as a police freeze?

No. A bank may restrict your account under its own compliance rules. A police freeze under Section 116D or an AMLA freeze under Section 50(1) comes from a legal order outside the bank. Each is challenged in a different way, so knowing the source matters.

Can I get money released while my account is frozen?

If an enforcement agency froze the account under AMLA Section 44, Section 44A lets you apply in writing to the enforcement agency to release funds for reasonable living or business expenses. A lawyer prepares this with documents showing your real monthly needs. Other freezes have different release routes, depending on the authority.

How long can my account stay frozen?

An AMLA Section 44 freeze lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged. A Section 50 order or seizure lapses after 18 months if you are not charged. A police freeze under Section 116D also lapses after 18 months without a prosecution. Holds the bank places itself have no fixed limit, so the time varies.

Does this only cover mule account freezes?

No. This page covers any reason for a freeze: AMLA investigations, police action, bank holds, and court orders that have nothing to do with mule accounts. If a mule account charge is involved, our [mule account lawyer page](/mule-account-lawyer-malaysia/) goes into more detail.

Can I use this outside Kuala Lumpur?

Yes. The WhatsApp process is the same wherever you are in Malaysia. Your first message goes to this referral service, not to a lawyer, so keep it to the basic facts.
