Who is this page for?

It is for anyone with a mule account case involving a police station, CCID office or court in Kuala Lumpur or the Klang Valley. You may have been called for a statement, had your account frozen, or you or a family member may already be arrested or charged.

The same WhatsApp enquiry used for the rest of Malaysia works here too.

Which unit handles these cases in KL?

In Kuala Lumpur, a mule account report can start at a local station such as Dang Wangi, Brickfields, Sentul or Cheras, depending on where it was filed. Once it is seen as a mule account matter, it usually goes to CCID, also called JSJK, the police Commercial Crime Investigation Department. [f1]

Knowing this tells you who you are likely dealing with. A lawyer who knows how KL stations pass cases to CCID can tell you which stage your case is at.

What happens before any arrest?

Some KL mule account cases start with a frozen account, not an arrest. Under the 2024 amendment, a police officer of Sergeant rank or above can freeze an account and block transactions at once under CPC Section 116D, with no court order first. [f2] This can happen before you have spoken to the police at all.

Being asked to give a statement is not the same as being arrested. You can usually go home once the statement is recorded. If you are unsure, ask directly whether you are under arrest.

Remand and court in KL

If you are arrested, the investigating officer may ask a KL Magistrate for a remand order under CPC Section 117. Remand means being held in custody while police investigate. For s424A, s424B and s424C, which carry under 14 years, the first period is up to 4 days, extendable once by up to 3 more, so 7 days at most. Only offences carrying 14 years or more allow 7 days plus 7 more. [f3]

You must be brought before the Magistrate in person. That is where a lawyer at your side makes the most practical difference.

If you are charged, the case is heard at the KL Magistrate’s Court or Sessions Court. The prosecution decides which one; the charge under Section 424A, 424B or 424C is a clue. All three are bailable offences, so bail is a right once you are charged, with the court or police setting the amount and conditions. [f5]

Your rights are the same at every KL station

Article 5(3) of the Federal Constitution gives you the right to consult and be defended by a lawyer of your choice. [f4] It is the same at Dang Wangi, at Sentul, or before a Magistrate at the KL courts complex.

Ask for a lawyer clearly and early, before you answer detailed questions about the case. Our guide to what happens after arrest covers the hours right after an arrest.

Across the Klang Valley

This is not limited to central Kuala Lumpur. The same station-to-court process applies in Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, Ampang and the rest of the Klang Valley. These areas share the same court system.

If your case is outside the Klang Valley, our nationwide mule account lawyer page covers the same process for other states. For freezes with causes other than a mule account charge, see our frozen account lawyer page.

How common are these cases?

Police detected 46,048 mule accounts in 2023 and 50,295 in 2024. [f6] Some account holders did not knowingly take part in a crime.

How the WhatsApp enquiry works for KL cases

Send a short message with what you know: which station or court, roughly when it started, and what you have been told. You do not need every detail first.

We use your message to refer you to a lawyer. The lawyer can then explain your position and a sensible next step. Whether you go further is your decision.

If you have a remand date, a statement call or a charge in a KL court, a lawyer can prepare you for that specific step.

I was called to a KL police station about a mule account. What happens now?

First, ask clearly whether you are going in to give a statement or being arrested. The two lead to different processes. After a statement you can normally leave once it is recorded. Either way, speaking to a lawyer before you go tells you what to expect.

Which unit investigates mule account cases in KL?

They are usually handled by CCID, also called JSJK, the police Commercial Crime Investigation Department. A report may start at a local station such as Dang Wangi, Brickfields or Sentul. Once it is seen as a mule account matter, it is usually passed to CCID.

If I am arrested in KL, where does my case go?

If the investigation needs more time, you may be brought before a KL Magistrate, who decides on a remand application. If you are charged, the case goes to the Magistrate's Court or the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur. The prosecution decides which one, and the section on your charge (424A, 424B or 424C) is a clue.

How long can I be held before going to court in KL?

Remand under CPC Section 117 is limited by the offence. For offences carrying under 14 years, which includes s424A, s424B and s424C, it is up to 4 days first, extendable by up to 3 more. Only offences carrying 14 years or more allow 7 days plus 7 more. A Magistrate must approve each period. You must be brought before the Magistrate in person, and that is when having a lawyer there matters most.

Is bail available for mule account charges in KL?

Yes. Sections 424A, 424B and 424C are all bailable offences, so bail is a right once you are charged. The court or police set the amount and conditions. Our [bail process guide](/bail-process/) explains that stage.

Does this cover only central KL, or the wider Klang Valley too?

The whole Klang Valley, including Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Subang and Cheras, not only central KL. If your case is elsewhere in Malaysia, our [nationwide mule account lawyer page](/mule-account-lawyer-malaysia/) covers the same process for other states.
