What to do about a frozen account in Johor Bahru

Which laws freeze accounts and make mule accounts a crime?

A freeze can be made under AMLA 2001 section 50, which lets the Public Prosecutor freeze an account suspected of holding money from crime ^[f1]. Under the 2024 amendments, a police officer of Sergeant rank or above can also freeze an account under Criminal Procedure Code section 116D, without a court order ^[f2].

If the police suspect a mule account, the Penal Code applies. The most serious offence is section 424C, which covers transactions through an account without a lawful purpose ^[f3].

Which Johor Bahru courts could hear your case?

A case serious enough to reach the High Court can be heard at the Johor Bahru High Court ^[f6]. The prosecution decides whether a charge starts in the Magistrates’ Court or the Sessions Court, and the court named on your charge sheet or notice is where you attend.

You may be able to apply to release money you need to live on while the freeze runs. For a police freeze under section 116D, the application goes to the Sessions Court. For an AMLA freeze by an enforcement agency, you apply in writing to that agency, and a lawyer can prepare it for you.

Which police station may contact you in Johor Bahru?

IPK Johor is on Jalan Tebrau, and the district stations include IPD Johor Bahru Selatan, Johor Bahru Utara and Iskandar Puteri ^[f7]. If you are called to give a statement, the notice or call should say which station and which officer. Write both down.
