Getting money for living costs while a Johor Bahru account is frozen
A freeze hurts most when rent, wages and bills are due and your money is locked. The law gives you a way to ask for some of it back before the freeze ends.
It will not release the whole account. But it can free enough for reasonable expenses, which changes how you plan the coming weeks.
How a section 44A request works
AMLA section 44A lets an account holder apply to vary a freeze. You apply in writing to the enforcement agency that froze the account under section 44, and a more senior officer decides. The aim is to release money for reasonable living or business costs [f1].
It is a request, not an automatic right, so it needs a clear statement of what you need and records to back it up.
What to prepare
Good records make the request clearer. Collect proof of rent, wages and regular bills, plus bank statements that show your normal spending.
A lawyer can turn those records into a focused application and send it to the right office. You can read about frozen-account legal cost before you decide.
Check which freeze you have first
The section 44A route is only for a section 44 freeze by an enforcement agency, so confirm the type of freeze. An AMLA freeze can be ordered by the Public Prosecutor under section 50 [f2].
A police freeze under CPC section 116D is different. A police officer of Sergeant rank or above makes it directly, with no court order [f4].
A freeze by an enforcement agency under section 44 lasts up to 90 days unless a charge is brought. An order under section 50 lapses after 18 months if no one is charged, under section 52A [f3].
Who you deal with in Johor Bahru
The law is federal, but the offices are local. Johor Bahru is a High Court location [f6], and IPK Johor is on Jalan Tebrau, with IPD Johor Bahru Selatan, Johor Bahru Utara and Iskandar Puteri among the district stations [f7].
A section 44A request goes to the agency that froze the account, so find its name and address on your freeze notice first. If police froze it under section 116D, the officer named in the notice tells you which station to deal with.
If money is tight, the Legal Aid Department (JBG) has a Johor office [f5], and the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre for Johor is in the Ibrahim International Business District [f8].
What to send to start
You do not need a finished application before you get in touch. A short message about your JB account and the bills you must pay is enough to start planning a section 44A request. See what a lawyer can do.

Can I release money for rent while my JB account is frozen?
Sometimes. AMLA section 44A lets you apply in writing to the agency that froze the account, asking it to vary the freeze so money can be released for reasonable living or business costs [f1]. A more senior officer decides. It is not automatic. A lawyer can prepare the application for you.
What counts as a reasonable expense under section 44A?
Section 44A covers reasonable living and business expenses [f1]. That can include essentials such as rent, wages and everyday bills, not extra spending. The better your records show real need, the clearer the request. The agency makes the final decision.
Which freeze am I dealing with?
Check this first, because the steps differ. An AMLA freeze can be ordered by the Public Prosecutor under section 50 [f2]. A CPC section 116D freeze is made directly by a police officer of Sergeant rank or above, with no court order [f4]. The section 44A route is only for an AMLA section 44 freeze made by an enforcement agency.
How long can the freeze last while I apply?
A freeze by an enforcement agency under section 44 lasts up to 90 days unless a charge is brought. An order under section 50 lapses after 18 months if no one is charged (section 52A) [f3]. You can still make a section 44A request while a freeze lasts. Applying does not make you give up any other right.
What if I cannot afford a lawyer in JB?
Which police station handles a freeze in Johor Bahru?
It depends on who froze the account, and your freeze notice should say. If police are involved, IPK Johor is on Jalan Tebrau and the district stations include IPD Johor Bahru Selatan, Johor Bahru Utara and Iskandar Puteri [f7]. Do not guess: use the station and officer named on your papers.
