Who is this page for?
You know you did not knowingly help move criminal money. Yet your account has been frozen or flagged, or the police have called you in. Maybe your account was taken over without your knowledge, or someone you trusted talked you into something that turned out to be a scam.
Either way, being innocent and being formally cleared are not the same thing in law. A lawyer can help you show what really happened.
What does “innocent” mean in a mule account case?
Charges under Sections 424A, 424B and 424C depend on what each section covers and on your facts. Two questions come up often. Did you have control of the account? What did you know, and why did you act? [f1]
Control means the practical ability to operate the account, such as a shared PIN, an online banking login, or holding the card. [f2] If you never had that ability, or someone got it without your consent, that goes straight to your defence.
Does “I did not know” help you?
What you knew and why you acted matter to your defence. [f3] Real unawareness, plus clear proof that you never received or gained from the money, is what a lawyer can build your case on.
Innocence is not something you simply say; you show it with specific facts and evidence.
If you were deceived yourself
Some people caught up in mule account cases were victims first. A fake job offer, a romance scam, or a “help me for a small fee” request from a fake friend are stories that can sit behind innocent cases. [f4]
If you were tricked into giving access or details, that matters in law. A lawyer can help you set out what you were told, when, and why you believed it, with any messages or records that back you up.
What evidence does a lawyer use?
Showing innocence depends on records, not a good story. A lawyer will usually check:
- bank statements, to confirm you did not withdraw or gain from the money
- messages or calls linked to how the account was accessed
- device and login records, where available
- a clear timeline of what happened and when
The evidence you gather early affects how strong this picture looks later. That is one reason to get advice sooner.
Your rights while this is sorted out
You can get a lawyer’s advice at every stage, from a police statement to court. If you are arrested, you have the right to consult a lawyer before questioning. Believing you are innocent does not take that away.
A freeze on your account also has legal limits. An AMLA section 44 freeze lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged, and a later seizure order lapses after 18 months if no one is charged. [f5] That does not mean you should just wait. Find out early what a lawyer can do at the stage you are at.
You are not the only one
Police detected 46,048 mule accounts in 2023 and 50,295 in 2024. [f6] Some involved people who were deceived themselves or whose accounts were taken over without their knowledge.
How to start
Send a short message: how you think your account was used, whether the police or your bank have contacted you, and anything you have already collected. It does not need to be polished.
We use your message to refer you to a lawyer, who can then give you an honest view of your position. If your situation is wider than this page, our general consultation page explains the process for any mule account matter.
If you still have the messages or login alerts from when your account was misused, a lawyer can use them to show what really happened.

I never gave anyone my bank details, but my account was still flagged. How?
Accounts can be taken over without you handing anything over, through phishing links, malware or a stolen OTP. If you did not knowingly share access, that is an important fact in your case. Keep any suspicious messages or login alerts from that time; they help show what happened.
A friend or online contact talked me into helping them. Does that still count as innocent?
It can. Some people in this situation were deceived by someone they trusted: a stranger online, a fake employer, or someone posing as a friend. A lawyer can raise deception as a factor, backed by evidence of what you were told and why you believed it. [f4]
Is "I did not know" enough on its own to avoid a charge?
Not automatically. What you knew and why you acted matter to your defence, and real unawareness counts. Real unawareness plus proof that you never gained any money is the kind of fact pattern a lawyer builds a defence on. [f3]
What evidence helps show I am innocent?
Bank statements showing no withdrawals for your own benefit, messages showing how the account was accessed or asked for, device and login records, and a clear timeline. The more of this you keep early, the more a lawyer has to work with.
Will my account stay frozen forever if I am innocent?
No, there are time limits. An AMLA section 44 freeze lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged, and a later seizure order lapses after 18 months if no charge is brought. [f5] That does not mean nothing happens meanwhile, so early advice still matters.
I already gave a statement to the police without a lawyer. Is it too late?
No. A lawyer can still review what you said, explain where things stand, and represent you from now on. It is not too late to ask for advice after a first police contact.
