Who is this page for?

It is for anyone with a mule account or frozen account problem. You might have just found out something is wrong, or you might already be dealing with the police or a court.

Maybe your account was frozen last week. Maybe you were called in for a statement, a family member was arrested, or you are simply worried. Either way, the first step is the same: get advice from a lawyer.

What does a mule account case involve?

Mule account charges in Malaysia fall under Sections 424A, 424B and 424C of the Penal Code. [f1] These cover holding another person’s account, handing control of your own account to someone else, and making transactions through an account without a lawful purpose. Each can be punished by a fine, jail, or both, depending on the section.

Not every case ends in a charge. Some stop at a frozen account, a bank query, or a police statement that goes no further. Seeing what a lawyer can do at each stage helps you work out where you stand.

Why do freezes happen so fast?

Under the 2024 amendment, a police officer of Sergeant rank or above can freeze an account and block transactions at once under CPC Section 116D, with no court order first. [f2] That is why you may only learn of a problem when your card stops working or a transfer fails.

A freeze can feel endless, but it has a limit. An AMLA freeze under Section 44 lasts up to 90 days unless someone is charged. A later seizure or Section 50 order lapses under Section 52A if no charge is brought within 18 months, and a police freeze under CPC Section 116D lapses after 18 months if no prosecution starts. [f3] Getting advice early matters because it shapes what happens during those months, not just after.

Is a consultation confidential?

Some people hold back because of this, so here is the plain answer. Evidence Act Section 126 means an advocate cannot disclose what a client tells them without the client’s express consent. [f4] It covers what you tell the lawyer while they work for you.

Ask the lawyer at the start whether it also covers a first meeting before you hire them. Your first WhatsApp enquiry goes to this independent referral service, not to a lawyer. Share the full details once you are speaking with the lawyer.

You do not need everything worked out before that conversation. The rule exists so you can speak honestly about a hard situation.

You have a right to a lawyer at any stage

Article 5(3) of the Federal Constitution gives you the right to consult and be defended by a lawyer of your choice. [f5] It applies whether you have spoken to no one yet, have already given a statement, or your case is already in court.

Worried it is too late because of something you said or did? It is not too late to get advice. A lawyer can still review your position and represent you from now on.

You are not the only one

Police detected 46,048 mule accounts in 2023 and 50,295 in 2024. [f6] Behind those numbers are people in every situation on this page: innocent account holders, students, business owners, and families of someone arrested.

If your account was misused or you were deceived yourself, our page for innocent mule account victims deals with that directly. If crypto or P2P trading is involved, see our crypto-linked freeze page.

What happens after you reach out?

Send a short message: roughly what happened, whether your account is frozen, and any contact with the police or your bank. It does not need to be complete or polished.

We use your message to refer you to a lawyer. The lawyer can then explain your position and the next steps, such as which documents to prepare or which deadline to watch.

If your account is frozen or the police have called you, a lawyer can tell you which of these stages you are in and what to do first.

I am not sure my situation is serious enough for a lawyer. Should I still ask?

Yes. A frozen account, a call from your bank, a police request for a statement, or worry about a family member's account are all reasons to get a first opinion. A short message is enough to start. A lawyer can then tell you whether you need to act, and how.

Does the first consultation cost anything?

This website is an independent referral service, so it cannot set or promise a lawyer's fees. Ask the lawyer you are referred to whether the first consultation has a fee. Get any cost confirmed in writing before you go ahead.

What do I need to send to start?

A short message is enough: roughly what happened, whether your account is frozen, and any contact you have had with the police or your bank. You do not need statements, documents or a neat timeline yet. Those can come later if needed.

Is what I tell the lawyer confidential?

Under Evidence Act Section 126, an advocate cannot disclose what a client tells them without the client's express consent. [f4] This covers what you tell the lawyer while they work for you. Whether it covers a first meeting before you hire them can depend on the facts, so ask the lawyer at the start. Your first WhatsApp message goes to this referral service, not to a lawyer, so keep it to the basic facts.

Do I have a right to a lawyer even if I have already spoken to the police?

Yes. Article 5(3) of the Federal Constitution gives you the right to consult and be defended by a lawyer of your choice, at any stage. [f5] Having already given a statement does not take that right away, and it is not too late to get advice.

What happens after I send my first message?

We use your enquiry to refer you to a lawyer. The lawyer can then explain your position and the next steps. That might mean collecting certain documents, checking a legal deadline, or preparing for a police or court process.
