Who is this page for?

Your bank account was frozen, and behind it is a P2P crypto trade, a wallet transfer or an exchange payout. If money linked to a scam report passed through your account while you were trading, this page is for you.

You need a lawyer who can follow that crypto trail, not treat it as an ordinary case.

Why does crypto trading lead to a freeze?

P2P trading is not illegal in Malaysia. [f1] The problem is where the ringgit in one of your transfers came from before it reached you. If a buyer paid you with money a scam victim later reported as stolen, your account is now a stop on that money’s path, whatever you gave in return.

Banks cannot see the crypto side of a P2P trade. They only see ringgit arriving again and again from strangers, which is exactly the pattern their monitoring is built to catch. [f2]

How the freeze happens

Under the 2024 amendments, a police officer of Sergeant rank or above can freeze an account and block transactions at once under CPC Section 116D, with no court order first. [f3] It can happen fast, before you have spoken to any investigator.

A freeze can also come under AMLA. An agency freeze lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged, and a later seizure order lapses after 18 months if no charge is brought. [f4] Knowing how long a freeze can last helps you plan while your case is dealt with.

Why a lawyer who knows crypto helps

A lawyer who understands P2P trading takes your platform trade history and matches each flagged bank transfer to a trade. That turns a vague “suspicious transfer” into a documented deal with a clear business reason.

A lawyer new to these platforms can still help, but it may take longer because the records must be explained from scratch. Time matters, especially while evidence is still fresh and easy to collect.

Which evidence matters in a crypto case?

Your platform trade history is the core of your case. Download your full records for the whole period in question, not only the trades being investigated. Include times, amounts, counterparty usernames and order status for each trade.

Keep screenshots of chats with counterparties on the platform. Do not delete your trading account or history; these records can help you. Bank statements showing the matching ringgit side complete the picture.

Is there a regulatory issue beyond the freeze?

Separately from the mule account question, Securities Commission Malaysia regulates digital asset exchanges. [f5] Depending on how much and how you trade, this may be a separate issue from the freeze. A lawyer can tell you whether it applies to you.

How common are mule account cases?

Mule accounts are a large enforcement area for police: they detected 46,048 in 2023 and 50,295 in 2024. [f6] Some may involve P2P traders whose accounts crossed paths with someone else’s scam.

How the WhatsApp enquiry works

Send a short message: roughly when the freeze happened, which platform or trades were involved, and what your bank or the authorities have told you. You do not need an organised case file first.

We use your message to refer you to a lawyer, who can then give you an honest view of your position and next steps. If your freeze has nothing to do with crypto, our general mule account consultation page covers the wider process.

If you can export your trade history, a lawyer can use it to match your trades to the frozen transfers and explain your options.

Why was my account frozen when I was only trading crypto?

The freeze is not about the crypto. It is about where the ringgit in a transfer came from. If a P2P buyer paid you with money later reported as scam proceeds, your account is part of that money trail, even though you really did trade in return. [f1]

Do I need a lawyer who understands crypto, or will any frozen account lawyer do?

A lawyer who knows P2P trading can use your platform history to match each flagged transfer to a trade. That can help show a transfer had a genuine commercial reason. A lawyer new to P2P may take longer to build the same picture.

Why do banks flag P2P crypto activity at all?

P2P trading creates many transfers with different, often unrelated people. That is the pattern banks watch for under anti-money laundering rules. [f2] Real trading and something worse look alike to the system, so it cannot tell them apart on its own.

Is my account frozen under police powers or under AMLA?

It could be either. Under the 2024 amendments, an officer of Sergeant rank or above can freeze an account and block transactions at once under CPC Section 116D, with no court order. [f3] A freeze can also come under AMLA. An agency freeze lasts up to 90 days unless the person is charged, and a later seizure order lapses after 18 months if no charge is brought. [f4]

Which records should I get from my crypto platform?

Export your full trade history for the whole period in question, not just the flagged trades. Include times, amounts, counterparty details and order status. Screenshots of platform chats and order confirmations also help show each transfer had a matching trade.

Could I face regulatory issues beyond the mule account question?

It depends on how much and how you trade. Securities Commission Malaysia regulates digital asset exchanges, separately from the mule account issue. [f5] A lawyer can tell you whether this applies to you; it is a different question from the freeze.
