Who is this page for?

Maybe someone called your account an “akaun keldai”, or you saw the term online and it sounded like you. This page is for you. Some people in this position never meant to break the law.

You may have lent a card to a friend, taken an easy-looking part-time job, sold something online or followed a trading contact’s instructions. None of it felt like a crime at the time. This page explains plainly where the law puts each of these situations.

What are five everyday ways people end up with a mule account?

Lending an ATM card or passbook. A friend, a relative or a stranger online offers you money to use your account “just for a while”. This is one route into a case, and it can start with someone you trusted.

A “part-time job” that pays you to move money. You are told to receive money and transfer it on, sometimes for a commission. It looks like normal gig work until the money turns out to come from a scam.

An online sale where the buyer redirects payment. You sell an item, and the buyer asks you to receive payment into a different account, or to use theirs. Some sellers do not question it at the time.

A crypto or forex “agent” giving you instructions. Someone posing as an investment helper asks you to receive or send money through your account as part of a trading deal.

A family member using your account. A parent, sibling or partner asks to use your account for their own payments, and you agree without asking much.

Why is “I didn’t know” not automatic protection?

None of these situations automatically makes you a criminal, but none is automatically safe either. What you knew, what you were told and what you did once something felt wrong all shape how the law treats your case.

That is why an early, plain conversation with a lawyer beats guessing. A lawyer checks your real facts against what the prosecution must prove, not against how the situation looks from outside.

What do Sections 424A, 424B and 424C mean?

The 2024 Penal Code amendments created three offences. Which one might apply to you changes what your defence looks like.

Section 424A is holding or controlling someone else’s account without lawful authority: a fine of RM5,000 to RM50,000, or 6 months to 5 years jail, or both. [f1] Section 424B, which can cover lending a card, is handing over your own account: a fine of RM10,000 to RM100,000, or 1 to 7 years jail, or both. [f2]

Section 424C, the most serious, is using an account for transactions without a lawful purpose, with 3 to 10 years jail, or a fine of RM10,000 to RM150,000, or both. [f3]

How fast can things move?

Under the 2024 amendments, a police officer of Sergeant rank or above can freeze an account and block transactions at once under CPC Section 116D, with no court order needed. [f4] For some people, the frozen account is the first sign of trouble, before any call or visit from police.

That is one reason not to wait. If your account is already frozen, our what to do now guide and our frozen account page cover the next steps.

How can you check if your account has been flagged?

If you are not sure, PDRM’s Semak Mule portal lets you check. Over 190,000 accounts have been flagged so far. [f5] Police detected 46,048 mule accounts in 2023 and 50,295 in 2024. [f6] Checking early is sensible.

What does a lawyer do from here?

A lawyer is not there to judge how this started. They look at your facts, tell you which section most likely applies and explain your realistic options.

Send a short WhatsApp message on how it happened: a lent card, a job offer, a sale or a family request. Where appropriate, we can help connect you with an independent lawyer who can explain your position without judgment.

I lent my ATM card to a friend for a small fee. Is that really a crime?

It can be. Handing control of your own account to someone else is what Section 424B covers, even if it is a friend and even for a small fee. The penalty is a fine of RM10,000 to RM100,000, or 1 to 7 years jail, or both. A lawyer can look at what happened and tell you where you stand.

I took a 'part-time job' that asked me to receive and forward money. What now?

People can be flagged this way without knowing the money came from a scam. Whether Section 424A or 424C applies depends on the details. Get advice on your own facts before you do anything else.

A buyer online asked me to use a different account to receive payment. Am I in trouble?

Possibly. If the account was not yours, or the payment went through in a way you did not fully understand, a lawyer can tell you if Section 424A applies and what evidence supports your side.

I genuinely didn't know the money was connected to anything illegal. Does that matter?

It can matter a lot for your defence, but it does not protect you on its own. What you knew, when you knew it and what you did once you suspected a problem all shape your case. Explain these details to a lawyer rather than guessing alone.

How do I check if my account has actually been flagged as a mule account?

PDRM's Semak Mule portal lets you check online. [f5] Knowing your status helps you describe your situation, but you can send a message without checking first.

Will talking to a lawyer make things look worse, like I'm admitting guilt?

No. Asking a lawyer for advice is not an admission of anything. It lets you understand your real legal position before you say or sign anything to police or your bank.
