Why Telegram is a favourite recruiting ground

Telegram has large channels, automated bots, disappearing messages and easy anonymity. Recruiters can use them to run an assembly line instead of one chat at a time.

That is what makes a Telegram job offer feel organised and real. The polish is the point, and the account request is hidden inside it.

Step one: the task channel that looks like a real employer

It starts in a public channel advertising simple daily tasks for daily pay. Liking videos, rating products and completing “orders” can be covers.

The channel has a professional name, pinned rules and a large member count. None of that is proof, because a channel and its numbers can be faked [f3].

Step two: the bot that runs your onboarding

You are sent to a bot that assigns tasks, tracks your “earnings” and shows a rising balance. The automation makes it feel like a real platform with a dashboard.

A bot can handle a crowd of recruits at once and give the illusion of a system. It can move you toward the moment your account is needed.

Step three: the small early payouts

Early on, the bot may release small real payments. Seeing money arrive can quiet your doubts.

This can be deliberate. A small early payout can buy your trust, so that when a bigger deposit or an account request appears, you comply instead of walking away.

Step four: the admin message and the account request

Then an “admin” messages you directly to upgrade your role, unlock higher pay, or set up a “salary” or “company” account. This is where the mule request lands.

Giving control of your own account to another person is the act in Penal Code s424B, with a fine of RM10,000 to RM100,000 or 1 to 7 years in jail, or both [f1].

If scam money then runs through your account, s424C can apply, with 3 to 10 years in jail or a fine of RM10,000 to RM150,000, or both [f2].

Step five: how it ends for the recruit

Once your account carries illicit money, the trail leads to you, not to the anonymous admin. A victim reports the scam, the 997 hotline can trigger an urgent freeze, and your details may appear on the Semak Mule portal [f4] [f3].

The bot and the admin may vanish, and the channel may be abandoned or renamed. The account holder is the person investigators can find.

On Telegram, handles can change and chats can be deleted, so recruiters can be hard to trace. Your bank account is tied to your real name.

What to do if you recognise this

If these steps match your experience, stop replying and stop moving money. Keep the channel, the bot chat, the admin messages and every transfer record.

Report through the 997 hotline, which runs 24 hours, if you were scammed, and speak to a lawyer before giving a detailed police statement [f4]. What you knew and were told is central, and it is better explained with guidance than guessed at under pressure.

Message us on WhatsApp with the chats and your bank records, and a lawyer can help you work out your next step.

The Telegram bot paid me real money at first. Does that make it genuine?

No. Small early payouts are bait to build trust before the account request or bigger deposits arrive. Once you route other people's money or hand over your account, Penal Code s424B and s424C can apply [f1] [f2], whatever those first small transfers were.

The channel has thousands of members and earning screenshots. Is that proof?

No. Member counts, pinned testimonials and earning screenshots can be faked with fake accounts. They exist to create false confidence [f3]. Judge the offer by what it asks you to do with your bank account, not by how busy the channel looks.

An admin messaged me to set up a salary account. What is the risk?

When the admin asks you to open or hand over a bank account for the job, that is the mule request. Giving control of your own account to someone else is the act in s424B, which carries a fine of RM10,000 to RM100,000 or 1 to 7 years in jail, or both [f1]. Stop, keep the chat, and get advice before agreeing.

I already did some tasks and gave my account. What now?

Stop all activity and do not move any more money. Keep the channel, the bot chat, the admin messages and your transfer records, and report through the 997 hotline if you were scammed [f4]. Speak to a lawyer before you give a detailed police statement so your account is explained accurately.
