What gets a frozen AmBank account working again?

A hold on an ordinary AmBank account can come down to one question: where did this money come from? If you can answer it clearly, with documents, you have a useful tool for getting the hold reviewed.

So treat gathering proof, not phoning the bank, as your main job. One well-organised file can do more than many trips to the counter.

What proof of source of funds looks like

Every payment into your account has a reason, and the bank wants that reason on paper.

  • Salary: payslips or a letter from your employer.
  • A large one-off sum from a property deal: the sale and purchase agreement.
  • Business income: invoices and the matching contracts.
  • Borrowed money: the loan agreement.

Each document should show who paid, how much and why. If the money came from a friend or relative, a short signed note from them giving the reason, plus their own record of the payment, helps fill the gap.

Why AmBank flagged the account

Knowing the trigger tells you what to document. AmBank’s own systems can flag a transaction that looks unusual for you. The bank can also restrict an account under its own account terms and anti-money-laundering duties. [f3]

The freeze may also come from outside the bank. Police can freeze an account under CPC 116D during a criminal investigation. [f2] An enforcement agency can order a freeze under AMLA section 44 where an account is linked to suspected proceeds of crime. [f1] The account is the same, but the way out is very different.

How to find out what kind of block it is

You may notice only because something stops working, not because a letter arrives. [f4] The AmBank app or online banking may show limited access, or a card payment is declined.

Before you assume the worst, confirm the type. Call 03-2178 8888, or better, visit a branch with your IC. Ask whether it is a compliance hold, a police freeze or an AMLA freeze, and get the reference number. Only a compliance hold can be cleared with documents alone.

How to submit documents to AmBank compliance

Once you know which transaction is in question, build the file around it. Put the flagged payment first, then the record that explains it. Then add your IC, proof of income, and statements showing how the money moved.

Hand it in as one complete set: originals to check and clear copies to keep. Ask the compliance officer to confirm they received it and to say what, if anything, is still missing. One complete set works better than several partial ones.

If documents are not enough

If AmBank has your full file and a compliance hold still drags on with no explanation, escalate to Bank Negara through BNMLINK at 1-300-88-5465. [f5] Keep a log of branch visits, officer names and reference numbers, because that record helps a complaint. Our BNM complaint process guide sets out the steps.

A complaint to Bank Negara cannot lift a police or AMLA freeze. For those, a lawyer can present the same evidence to the investigating officer or the court, not the branch. If that is your situation, start with finding legal help.

Your checklist for today

  1. Confirm the type of freeze at the branch.
  2. Find the flagged transaction.
  3. Get the one document that explains it.
  4. Add your IC, proof of income and the relevant statements.
  5. Keep it all in one folder, dated and in order.

Do not move money between your other accounts while you do this. Our what to do now guide has a wider checklist. If it turns out to be a police or AMLA freeze, get legal advice before you speak to anyone. Our guide on how account freezes work explains what you are dealing with.

What counts as proof of source of funds for AmBank?

Any document that links money coming in to a lawful source. That means payslips or an employer letter for salary, a sale and purchase agreement for property money, invoices for business income, or a signed loan agreement for borrowed money. It should show who paid, how much, and why.

Which transaction should I document first?

The one that caused the flag. If one large or unusual payment is behind the freeze, start there. Trace where it came from and find the record behind it. A clear explanation of that one transfer is worth more than a pile of unrelated statements.

Should I bring originals or copies to AmBank?

Bring both. The compliance officer checks the originals and keeps clear copies. Hand in a full set at once, not bit by bit. Incomplete sets can slow the review.

How long does an AmBank compliance review take?

No fixed time applies to a hold AmBank put on itself. It depends on how complete and consistent your papers are. A police freeze under CPC 116D or an AMLA freeze runs on the authority's timetable, not the bank's, and documents alone will not lift it. Ask which type you have before you plan.

What if my documents do not clear the freeze?

If AmBank has all your papers and still does not respond in a reasonable time on a compliance hold, escalate to Bank Negara through BNMLINK at 1-300-88-5465. If it is a police or AMLA freeze, give your papers to a lawyer, who can present them to the investigating officer or the court.

Do I need a lawyer if I have all the paperwork?

Not always. For a simple compliance hold you can document it yourself. But if the police or the Public Prosecutor ordered the freeze, a lawyer knows how to present the same papers to the investigating officer and the court. That is very different from handing them in at a branch.
