How do I build a chronology of events?
List every relevant event in date order, from the first contact linked to the money through to the freeze and after. Next to each line, note the document that proves it. One ordered list turns a confusing situation into something anyone can follow.
You can do this yourself, before you see a lawyer. A clear timeline saves time later and makes it harder to misread your case.
Start with the events
Put each event on its own line, with the date, a short factual note of what happened, and the proof. Include:
- the first contact with the person or company involved
- any agreement you made
- each transfer in and out of the account
- key messages and calls
- the freeze notice
- any report you made to the bank or police
Do not leave out small events because they seem minor. The CCID investigates these cases, and the details that connect events can matter [f1].
Back every line with a document
A chronology is only as strong as the proof behind it. Next to each line, note where the proof is: a bank statement page, a chat log, an invoice or a receipt.
If a Semak Mule check showed a flag on your account, add the date you checked and keep a copy of the result [f2]. Record facts and sources only, not opinions.
Keep it factual, and get advice before you share it
Do not argue your case inside the chronology. It works because it is plain, dated and easy to check.
Get legal advice before you share it or give a detailed statement. Article 5(3) gives you the right to a lawyer of your choice [f4]. A lawyer can check the timeline for gaps and use it to prepare you for questioning.
The timeline also helps you track the freeze, because a seizure order under AMLA section 52A lapses 18 months after it is made if no one is charged [f3]. For more, see evidence preparation and what documents you need.

How far back should my chronology go?
Start from the first contact or event linked to the money, even if it seems minor, and carry on to the freeze and anything after it. The CCID investigates these cases, so the whole sequence matters, not one transfer [f1]. If a Semak Mule check showed a flag, add the date you checked, because that is an event too [f2].
What should each line of the chronology contain?
Each line needs three things: the date, a short factual note of what happened, and the document that proves it. Leave out opinions and conclusions. Anyone reading a line should be able to check it quickly against the document.
Should I show my chronology to the police myself?
Build it first, but get legal advice before you share it or give a detailed statement. Article 5(3) gives you the right to a lawyer of your choice [f4]. The chronology also helps you track the freeze, because a seizure order under AMLA section 52A lapses 18 months after it is made if no one is charged [f3].
