Why Did Several Banks Freeze My Accounts?

A single investigation can reach every account tied to your identity, so several freezes can share one cause.

Why did several banks freeze my accounts at the same time?

It can be one cause, not several problems. A single investigation can reach every account linked to your name or IC number. Once you are flagged, all the banks involved can act together, so the freezes arrive at once.

One cause, many accounts

The freeze may come from an AMLA section 50(1) order, made by the Public Prosecutor when money is suspected to come from crime [f2].

Or it may be a police freeze under section 116D of the Criminal Procedure Code. An officer of Sergeant rank or above can impose it at once, without a court order [f1].

Either power can cover all the accounts of one person. So several freezes at once can point to one suspicion, not many.

How to check what is flagged

The PDRM Semak Mule portal lets you check whether an account or phone number is flagged as a mule. Recent reports show more than 190,000 accounts flagged [f3]. Checking shows you where each of your accounts stands.

Read every notice or letter from each bank. It may say which power was used and who to contact, which decides your next step. A bank can also restrict an account under its own anti-money-laundering checks, so ask each bank which it is.

When you are the victim

If a scammer targeted you, a report to the National Scam Response Centre on 997 can trigger urgent freezes. These can reach linked accounts quickly [f4]. So a victim’s accounts can be frozen as well as a suspect’s.

If you are the victim, keep all evidence of the scam. It helps you explain your position clearly when you get advice.

What to do now

Several freezes at once can mean one investigation has reached your linked accounts, not that separate troubles are piling up [f1] [f2]. The number of frozen accounts does not show guilt.

Check what is flagged, read the notices and keep your records. Get advice before you reply in detail. A lawyer can find out which power froze each account and what you can apply for.

Does freezing all my accounts mean I am in more trouble?

Not necessarily. One investigation can reach every account linked to your name, rather than several separate problems [f2]. The number of frozen accounts does not show guilt. What matters is the reason for the suspicion and what your records show about how each account was used.

How do I find out what is actually flagged?

The PDRM Semak Mule portal lets you check whether an account or phone number is flagged as a mule [f3]. Check each of your accounts early. Read every notice or letter from each bank, as it may say which power was used and who to contact.
