GrabPay Frozen: What to Do
Your GrabPay wallet is locked and you need to know your options.

How GrabPay freezes happen
GrabPay is an e-wallet used for rides, food delivery, groceries and daily payments. It is a regulated payment instrument under the Financial Services Act 2013, so the same freeze powers that apply to bank accounts apply to it. [f1]
A GrabPay wallet can be frozen in three ways:
- The police can freeze it under CPC Section 116D during a criminal investigation. [f2]
- The Public Prosecutor can order it frozen under AMLA Section 50(1) if it is suspected of holding money from unlawful activity. [f4]
- Grab’s own compliance team can block it, under its anti-money laundering duties and its own risk rules.
An e-wallet carries the same legal risk as a bank account. Under Penal Code Section 424A, possessing or controlling another person’s payment instrument is an offence, with a fine of RM5,000 to RM50,000, or 6 months to 5 years in prison, or both. [f3]
What a frozen GrabPay looks like
When the wallet is frozen, payments, transfers or top-ups are usually blocked. The app may show an error, or your balance may show but cannot be used. Sometimes the whole GrabPay function is switched off.
A frozen wallet does not always block your whole Grab account. If a separate credit or debit card is linked to your profile, you may still book rides or order food. The freeze targets the wallet, not the app.
If GrabPay stops working with no explanation, check the app for notifications or messages from Grab. If there are none, contact Grab support through the in-app help centre. Ask directly whether your wallet has been restricted or frozen.
Which laws apply
GrabPay is regulated by Bank Negara Malaysia as part of the payment system. [f1] So Grab must follow BNM’s anti-money laundering rules, and enforcement agencies can use the same legal tools they use on bank accounts.
CPC Section 116D lets police freeze any payment instrument linked to an offence without a court order. [f2] AMLA Section 50(1) lets the Public Prosecutor order a freeze of wallets suspected of holding money from unlawful activity. [f4] Both can happen quickly, without warning to the wallet holder.
Penal Code Section 424A applies to e-wallets just as it does to bank accounts. [f3] If your wallet received or passed on money linked to fraud, even without your knowledge, the consequences can be serious. That is why early legal advice matters.
Steps to take right now
Contact Grab support through the app and ask for written confirmation of the restriction. Ask why the wallet was frozen, whether an outside authority ordered it, and what you need to do. Screenshot every reply.
Download your GrabPay transaction history from the app. You will need it whether you deal with Grab’s compliance team, the police or a lawyer. Focus on transactions in the period before the freeze.
Do not open a new GrabPay account or move money through other channels. That can look like an attempt to get around a lawful restriction and will make things worse. Leave your other payment methods as they are.
If you know which transaction triggered the freeze, gather papers that explain it: invoices, agreements, messages with the sender, or receipts showing what the payment was for. Clear records help a lawyer explain the payment.
Your rights as a GrabPay user
You can ask why your wallet is frozen. If the police or an AMLA agency ordered it, you can ask which authority and for the reference number. If Grab restricted the wallet under its own rules, ask what triggered it.
You can consult a lawyer at any stage. Apart from basic identity checks by Grab or your bank, you can get legal advice before you give a statement. A lawyer can make sure nothing you say or submit harms your position.
A freeze under AMLA Section 50(1) must be a written order from the Public Prosecutor. [f4] A freeze under CPC Section 116D must be a written order from a police officer of Sergeant rank or above. [f2] If neither basis is clear, you may have grounds to challenge it, and a lawyer can check this for you.
Why innocent GrabPay users get frozen
One reason is receiving money from someone involved in a scam. Scammers pass money through many e-wallets to break the trail. If one step in that chain goes through your GrabPay, your wallet gets flagged with theirs.
Other triggers include lending your Grab account to a friend, taking payment for an item from a buyer you do not know, or getting a large transfer that does not fit your usual use. None of these means you committed a crime. They explain why the system flagged your account.

Getting legal help
If the police or AMLA are involved in your GrabPay freeze, you need a lawyer. Without one, you face the authorities alone, and one mistake, such as an inaccurate statement, can complicate your case.
Even for a Grab compliance hold, a lawyer can write to Grab’s compliance team with your documents and ask for a review.
A lawyer who handles frozen account cases knows how e-wallet freezes work, which authorities are involved and how to present your case. The sooner you get advice, the sooner you can work toward release.

Why is my GrabPay wallet frozen?
A GrabPay wallet can be frozen by the police under CPC Section 116D, under AMLA, or by Grab's own compliance team under BNM rules. It may have been flagged because it received money linked to fraud, because someone reported a transaction involving you, or because automatic monitoring spotted unusual activity.
Can I still use Grab rides if my GrabPay is frozen?
Probably, if a separate credit or debit card is linked to your Grab account and is not frozen. You cannot use your GrabPay balance or top up the wallet. Check the payment settings in the Grab app to see which methods still work.
How long will my GrabPay wallet stay frozen?
It depends on who ordered the freeze. A Grab compliance hold may clear once you send supporting documents. A police freeze under CPC Section 116D lapses after 18 months if no prosecution is started, and a Sessions Court can vary or revoke it earlier. An AMLA Section 44 freeze lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged, and a later seizure order lapses after 18 months if no one is charged.
Can a lawyer help unfreeze my GrabPay?
Yes. A lawyer can contact Grab's compliance department for you and write to the officer or authority that ordered the freeze. If there are legal grounds, they can apply to vary or lift it: to the Sessions Court for a police s116D freeze, or in writing to the authority that ordered an AMLA freeze (s44A for an agency s44 freeze). A formal letter from a lawyer may get a clearer answer than customer support.
Will a GrabPay freeze affect my bank accounts?
Not automatically. But if the police or an AMLA authority ordered the freeze, the same authority may send separate freeze orders to your banks. Check your linked bank accounts and watch for new restrictions.
What documents should I prepare for a frozen GrabPay case?
Collect your GrabPay transaction history from the app, screenshots of the restriction, any messages from Grab about the freeze, and papers explaining large or unusual transactions. If someone sent you money through GrabPay, find records that show what the payment was for.
