If a Kelantan account freeze leaves you fearing you are a suspect, work through these questions.

Why is my account frozen, and am I now a suspect?
A freeze is not the same as a charge.
A freeze can come from the Public Prosecutor under AMLA section 50(1), when an account is suspected of holding money from crime [f1]. It can also come from the police during an investigation. Neither step decides that you are guilty.
You become a suspect when investigators treat you under Penal Code sections 424A to 424C. Whatever stage you are at, get advice before you give a statement.
How long can the freeze last?
An AMLA order lapses after 18 months if you are not charged in that time [f2]. That limit puts a clock on the process.
A lawyer can check which law was used on your Kelantan account and whether you can ask for the freeze to be varied, for example to pay for living costs. For more detail, see the freeze duration guide.
Do I need to travel to Kota Bharu?
The High Court for Kelantan sits in Kota Bharu [f6]. Which court hears a mule charge is for the prosecution to decide, so the answer comes only once a charge is made.
The offences are federal, so the law is the same across Malaysia. What is local is where your case is heard and when.
Your lawyer can tell you which dates need you in person, and handle routine steps where the court allows.
What penalties could I face?
It depends on the section charged. The heaviest is section 424C, for transactions through an account without a lawful purpose. It carries 3 to 10 years in jail or a fine of RM10,000 to RM150,000 [f3].
Sections 424A and 424B carry lower penalties. Working out which one applies to you comes first, because it shapes the whole defence. See section 424C explained.
When should I contact a lawyer?
As early as you can, and ideally before any police statement. If you are arrested, Article 5(3) of the Federal Constitution gives you the right to consult a lawyer of your choice [f5]. You must answer police questions truthfully, but you may decline questions whose answers could expose you to a charge.
Police will name the office that wants your statement, such as the Kelantan contingent on Jalan Bayam in Kota Bharu or a district headquarters [f9].
If cost worries you, the Legal Aid Department may help if your income qualifies [f4]. It has Kelantan and Gua Musang offices [f7], and the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre is in Kota Bharu [f8]. For immediate steps, see what to do now.

My Kelantan account is frozen. Does that make me a suspect?
Not by itself. A freeze can come from the Public Prosecutor under AMLA section 50(1) [f1] or from the police, before anyone decides whether to charge. You become a suspect when investigators treat you under Penal Code sections 424A to 424C. Either way, get advice before giving a statement.
How long can my account stay frozen?
An AMLA order lapses after 18 months if you are not charged in that time [f2]. A police freeze under CPC section 116D also lapses after 18 months without a prosecution, and you can apply to the Sessions Court to vary it. A lawyer can check which one applies to you.
Do I have to travel to Kota Bharu for the case?
The High Court for Kelantan sits in Kota Bharu. Which court hears a mule charge is for the prosecution to decide, so it is clear only once a charge is made. Your lawyer can tell you which dates need you in person and handle routine steps where allowed.
What penalty could I face?
It depends on the section. The heaviest is section 424C, for transactions through an account without a lawful purpose: 3 to 10 years in jail or a fine of RM10,000 to RM150,000, or both [f3]. Sections 424A and 424B carry lower penalties.
Is legal aid available to Kelantan residents?
Yes, if your income qualifies. The Legal Aid Department has a Kelantan office and a Gua Musang office, and the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre is in Kota Bharu. Ask about fees and eligibility early so cost does not stop you getting advice.
Where would I be asked to give a statement?
Police name the office when they call or write. The Kelantan contingent is on Jalan Bayam in Kota Bharu, and districts such as Pasir Mas and Machang have their own headquarters. Get advice before you go.
