If your account is being treated as a mule account anywhere in Perak, the order you act in matters. Do the urgent things first. The mule law is federal, so it is the same in Ipoh, Taiping and Teluk Intan.

First: cut off the recruiter

Stop dealing with whoever asked for your account, card or banking login. Do not move money, close the account or follow any more instructions. From now on, anything you do at their request can look like you were taking part.

Next: save the proof

Before records disappear, keep the offer or advert that drew you in, the full chat, transfer records and every bank notice. Note names, numbers and dates. Keep these records, because they can help show how you were approached.

Then: know which 424 section applies

The section decides the possible penalty. Holding someone else’s account is 424A: a fine of RM5,000 to RM50,000, or six months to five years in jail, or both. [f1] Giving control of your own account to someone else is 424B. [f2] The heaviest, using an account for transactions with no lawful purpose, is 424C, with 3 to 10 years in jail, or a fine of RM10,000 to RM150,000, or both. [f3]

Check how the freeze happened

Your freeze may have come under Criminal Procedure Code section 116D. It lets a police officer of Sergeant rank or above freeze an account without a court order. [f4] That is why it can feel sudden. You can apply to the Sessions Court to vary or lift it, and a lawyer can prepare that application.

Know the Ipoh courts

A case from anywhere in Perak goes through the state courts, and the High Court sits in Ipoh. Mule offences are tried in the Magistrates’ Court or Sessions Court, and the prosecution decides which.

A lawyer can attend with you, handle the papers and explain your side to the Perak investigators. If cost is a worry, the Legal Aid Department (Jabatan Bantuan Guaman) has a Perak office for people who meet its income test. [f5]

For the wider picture, see the Perak page. Read the freeze duration guide, finding legal help and the section 424C explainer. No one can promise a result.

Keep track of the freeze dates

A police freeze under section 116D lapses after 18 months if no prosecution is started. An AMLA freeze also lapses after 18 months if you are not charged. Note the date your account was frozen and which power was used.

If months pass with no charge, ask a lawyer to check whether the freeze has lapsed or can be challenged. Keep every letter from the day of the freeze. If you need help, send a short WhatsApp message and ask for a referral to an independent law firm.

The Legal Aid Department lists a Perak office and a Taiping office. [f8] The Malaysian Bar lists a legal aid centre in Ipoh, alongside the Perak Bar Committee. [f9]

If you cannot get to either, send a WhatsApp message and ask for a referral to an independent law firm. You can ask by message, so no trip is needed for that first step.

Why was my account frozen in Perak without a court order?

Which 424 section is the most serious?

Section 424C, using an account for transactions with no lawful purpose, is the heaviest: 3 to 10 years in jail, or a fine of RM10,000 to RM150,000, or both. Section 424A covers holding someone else's account, and 424B covers giving away your own. A lawyer reads the charge before advising.

I cannot afford a lawyer in Perak. What can I do?

The Legal Aid Department (Jabatan Bantuan Guaman) has a Perak office for people who meet its income test. The Perak Bar legal aid centre can also help at key stages. Ask for advice early.
