How to Screenshot Evidence That Courts Accept
Proper screenshots preserve your proof, but only if done correctly from the start.

Why the way you take screenshots matters
Taking a screenshot looks simple: press the buttons and you are done. In a legal case, though, how you take and store it decides whether it holds up as evidence or is rejected.
Malaysian courts apply the Evidence Act 1950, in particular Section 90A, to electronic documents, including screenshots. [f1] The court must be satisfied that the screenshot shows exactly what was on the device, with nothing changed. A screenshot that is cropped, out of context or missing timestamps can be challenged.
The steps below cover WhatsApp messages, banking app records and other digital evidence. For the wider picture, see our evidence preparation pillar.
What makes a screenshot useful in court
A screenshot is useful when it has enough information for the court to check it is genuine. Three things matter most.
Timestamps. Every screenshot should show the date and time of the messages or transactions. If the app shows a time next to each message, it must be visible. The clock and status bar at the top of your screen add another check.
Context. A single message without the conversation around it is weak evidence. [f2] The court wants to see the full exchange: who said what, in reply to what, and when. A single message can be read out of context, and the other side’s lawyer will argue exactly that.
Device details. Your phone’s status bar shows the time, network and battery level. Together with the phone’s make and model (in your phone settings), these help show the screenshot came from a particular phone at a particular time.
How to screenshot WhatsApp conversations
WhatsApp is a common source of evidence in frozen account and mule account cases. Use this method.
Open the chat you need. Scroll to the start of the relevant conversation, not the middle.
Take screenshots in order, scrolling down one screen at a time. Let each screenshot overlap a little with the one before, so the court can see there are no gaps.
Make sure timestamps are visible. WhatsApp shows the date above each day’s messages and the time beside each message, and both should be readable. If the messages cover several days, every date header must appear.
Then use WhatsApp’s own export. Open the chat, tap the three-dot menu, choose “Export chat” and then “Include media.” [f4] This creates a text file with every message, timestamp and media reference. Keep it with your screenshots as a complete record.
How to screenshot banking app records
Banking app screenshots need extra care, because the court looks closely at financial records.
Start with the account overview screen showing your account number and name, and screenshot it first. Then go to the transaction history. Set the date range to cover the period that matters for your case, including the time around the freeze. Ask your lawyer which dates matter.
Open each flagged or important transaction on its own. The detail screen shows the date, time, amount, reference number and recipient’s name, so screenshot that. The transaction list alone does not show enough.
Also download PDF statements from your online banking. A PDF statement carries the bank’s own format and is harder to challenge than a screenshot. Your evidence preparation guide explains which time periods matter most for your case.
How to screenshot Telegram and other apps
Telegram, WeChat and other messaging apps follow the same basic rules as WhatsApp, with a few differences.
In Telegram, you can forward messages to “Saved Messages,” which keeps the original sender and timestamp. This makes a second copy inside the app. Screenshot both the original conversation and the saved copy.
For apps with no export function, screenshots taken in order are your main tool. Start at the top of the relevant conversation and work down, overlapping each one. Also screenshot the contact screen showing the person’s name, phone number and profile picture.
Emails follow similar rules. Screenshot the whole email, including the sender’s address, recipient, date, subject and full text. Do not crop out the header. If there are attachments, open and screenshot them separately.
Keeping a record of who handled the evidence
Lawyers call this the “chain of custody”: a record of who had the evidence, when, and what happened to it. An unbroken record makes your evidence stronger.
When you take screenshots, note the exact date and time. Keep the originals in a folder named with the date. Do not rename, crop or edit the files, so their details (creation date, file size, image size) stay unchanged.
Keep copies in at least two places. Leave the originals on your phone, save a copy to cloud storage (Google Drive, iCloud), and copy them to a USB drive or computer. If your phone is seized, you still have backups.
If someone was with you when you took the screenshots, note their name and contact details. Sometimes a person who saw you take them adds credibility. Your lawyer can tell you whether this is needed in your case.
Common mistakes that weaken screenshots
Some common mistakes make screenshot evidence less useful. Avoid these.
Cropping. Cutting part of a screenshot, even to focus on one message, invites the claim that you removed something unhelpful. [f2] Always keep the full, uncropped screenshot. Your lawyer can point to the relevant parts later.
Editing or marking up. Drawing circles, adding arrows or highlighting text on the screenshot creates a changed image. Keep the original clean. If you want to point something out to your lawyer, do it in a separate note or message.
Partial conversations. Capturing only the messages that help you, and leaving out the rest, looks selective. [f3] Courts and investigators may notice gaps in timestamps and ask what is missing. Capture the whole thread.
Waiting too long. Screenshot as early as you can. The other person may delete messages, apps may update and change how things look, and phones can be lost or damaged.
Take your screenshots as soon as you learn about the investigation. Our guide on why you should not delete evidence explains the risks of waiting.
Screenshotting a screenshot. Forwarding a screenshot and then screenshotting the forwarded copy lowers the quality and strips the original details. Always use the original file.
How to store your screenshot evidence
Where and how you store screenshots matters as much as how you take them.
Make a dedicated folder on your phone, in cloud storage and on an external drive. Give it a clear name, such as “Legal Evidence” plus the date. Inside, sort the screenshots by date or by type (WhatsApp, banking, email).
Do not keep evidence only on your phone. If the police seize it under the Criminal Procedure Code, you may not get it back until the investigation ends. Cloud and external copies mean your lawyer can still see the evidence.
Send the full set to your lawyer as soon as you have it, by email or a secure file-sharing service. Your lawyer keeps a copy in your case file and can tell you if anything is missing or needs to be captured again.
When screenshots are not enough
Screenshots are a good start, but they have limits. Some evidence needs more.
Bank transactions should be backed up with official PDF statements from your bank. Banking app screenshots only add to these. A bank PDF carries the bank’s authority, which a phone screenshot does not. [f1]
For WhatsApp and Telegram, a chat export gives a backup that a computer can read. [f4] If a message is said to be fake, forensic analysts can examine the raw data in the export file. Screenshots show how the conversation looked, while exports show the data behind it.
In complex cases, your lawyer may arrange a forensic copy of your phone. A specialist copies everything on the device in a form that meets evidence standards. It costs more, but it gives the strongest evidence for court proceedings.

Are screenshots accepted as evidence in Malaysian courts?
Often, with conditions. Under Section 90A of the Evidence Act 1950, an electronic document can be used when you can show it is intact and the system that produced it is reliable. A phone screenshot with visible timestamps and details is stronger than one that has been cropped or edited.
Should I screenshot every message or just the important ones?
Screenshot whole conversations, not single messages. One message out of context can mislead and may be challenged. A full thread that shows how the conversation went carries more weight, so include the start and end of the relevant part.
Can I just show my phone to the police instead of taking screenshots?
Your phone may be seized during the investigation, and you could be without it for a long time. Screenshots and chat exports kept somewhere else mean you and your lawyer still have copies. Always make backups before any meeting with the authorities.
What if the other person deleted their side of the conversation?
Screenshot your side as soon as you can. If the sender deletes a message for everyone, it may disappear from your chat too. A copy you made before that is your record of what you received, and your lawyer can advise on how to use it.
How do I screenshot banking app transactions properly?
Open each transaction to its detail screen, showing the date, time, amount, reference number and recipient. Screenshot that detail screen, not the transaction list. Keep your account number visible at the top, and take the screenshots in order so the timeline is clear.
Is a chat export better than screenshots?
They do different jobs. An export keeps the whole conversation with timestamps in a text file that is harder to change. A screenshot shows what the conversation looked like on your screen. Use both together.
What if I accidentally crop or edit a screenshot?
Take a new, unedited screenshot. Cropped or edited screenshots may be challenged as tampered. If you already sent an edited one to your lawyer, send the original too and explain what happened. The court will want the unaltered version.
