How Telegram and WhatsApp recruitment works
It starts when you are added to a group or get a forwarded invite. Someone you know, or a total stranger, adds you to a Telegram or WhatsApp group that promises part-time income. The group has an admin, active members and regular posts about “payouts”. [f5]
Inside, other members post screenshots of their earnings. The admin gives instructions: receive money into your account, send it to a named account and keep a commission. The members seem happy and the testimonials look real. [f1]
What you may not know is that some of those members can be syndicate accounts posting fake praise. The earnings screenshots may be made up. In a scam group, the aim is to recruit people like you to move money for criminals.
Why messaging groups are different
Telegram and WhatsApp groups put pressure on you in ways a social media ad does not. That difference matters for your defence.
The group creates false trust. Seeing dozens of members post good experiences makes it feel safe. A syndicate can stage a group so that you believe the job is real. [f1]
Private messages add pressure. You can scroll past an ad, but an admin messages you directly. They check on you, hand out “tasks” and sometimes push you to act fast, which makes it harder to say no.
The closed group stops you checking. In a private group, you cannot easily check the job against outside sources, and the admin controls what you see. This can matter when a court asks what you knew and why you did it. [f2]
Your legal position under section 424C
Section 424C of the Penal Code covers transactions through an account without a lawful purpose. What you knew, and why you made the transactions, matter to your defence. [f2]
The group setting is central to your defence. The syndicate may have run a busy, convincing group with fake testimonials and organised admins. If so, your lawyer can argue that you believed the job was genuine.
The penalties under section 424C are serious, with a large fine and a long prison term. That is why a lawyer who handles mule account cases matters: your defence depends on how the story of your recruitment is told.
Save your chat evidence now
This is the most urgent step. Scam groups can be deleted once police start investigating. [f4] When the group goes, the proof of how you were recruited may go with it.
Export the full chat. WhatsApp and Telegram both let you export chat histories. Do it for every group and every private chat with the admin or recruiter, and save the files to the cloud and another device.
Screenshot key messages. Focus on the first invite, the job description, payment instructions, other members’ earnings claims and any pressure or threats from admins. Each screenshot should show the date, time, sender and full message. [f3]
Save the member list. If you can see the members, screenshot the list. It helps police identify the syndicate and shows how large and organised the scheme was.
Keep your phone data. Do not factory-reset the phone, delete the apps or clear chat data. Your lawyer and a forensic specialist may be able to recover more from the device.
What to do now
Once your evidence is saved, take these steps before anything else.
Stop all transfers. Do not process any more transactions, even if the admin pushes you. Carrying on after you became suspicious weakens your defence.
Do not warn other group members. You may want to alert others, but contacting members could be seen as interfering with an investigation. Ask your lawyer first.
Contact a lawyer now. A lawyer who handles mule account cases can review your chats, advise whether to make a police report and start building your defence. Read what to do in the first hours as well.
If police contact you, cooperate but ask for a lawyer. Attend when called, and ask to speak to a lawyer before you give a statement. The rules on how a statement can be used are technical, so get legal advice first.
How a lawyer uses your group evidence
A lawyer builds your defence around the way you were deceived.
The fake testimonials. Staged praise and made-up earnings screenshots show the syndicate worked hard to make the scam convincing. Your lawyer can use this to show you were deceived, not a willing partner.
The pressure timeline. Messages where the admin rushes you, checks your progress or answers your doubts show you were manipulated. This speaks directly to the “reason to believe” test in section 424C.
What you did when you suspected. If you stopped, asked questions or raised doubts in the chat, those messages matter. They can show you were deceived and then realised something was wrong.
The size of the scheme. A large group, organised admins and set routines can show a professional operation that was hard to spot. A strong defence puts your small role in the context of that larger scheme.
Why act now
Groups can be deleted [f4] and phone data can be overwritten. The investigation goes on with whatever evidence exists at the time.
A lawyer who steps in early can help you save your evidence and deal with investigators. If a Telegram or WhatsApp “job” has frozen your account, do not wait.

The group had hundreds of members. Does that help my case?
It can help. A large, active group makes a scheme look like a real business. The size, the fake testimonials and other members taking part can support your point that you believed the job was real. Your lawyer can show them to the court as part of how you were deceived.
The group was deleted. Is my evidence gone?
Not necessarily. Screenshots or chat exports you made before it was deleted are still valid, and WhatsApp keeps backups on your phone and in the cloud. A lawyer can help you recover and keep what is left, so act quickly before phone storage is overwritten.
I was pressured by the group admin to keep going. Does that matter?
It can. If the admin threatened you, rushed you or pushed you to keep going, save all those messages. A lawyer can use them to explain why you acted as you did.
Should I leave the group or stay in it?
Do not leave yet. First export or screenshot the whole chat, including the member list, admin messages and pinned posts. After that you can leave, but do not delete the app, because data on the phone may still help your lawyer.
Can police trace the group admin?
Police can ask Telegram and WhatsApp for account details, but syndicates can use unregistered numbers or foreign SIM cards. Your chat evidence may help the police identify the admin. Ask your lawyer how best to hand it over.
What if I only did one or two transfers?
Even one transfer can lead to a charge under section 424C. The number of transactions may affect the sentence. A small role, together with evidence that you were deceived, is something your lawyer can put to the court.
