Why a contact log protects you

Once your account is frozen, people start contacting you: bank officers, investigating officers, and sometimes callers you cannot verify. Under stress, the details blur. A contact log fixes each one in writing while it is fresh.

It does two jobs. It gives you an accurate record to rely on, and it feeds your case timeline and your lawyer’s understanding of the case.

What to record for every contact

For each call or visit, note the same things every time. Write the date and time, who contacted you, their name and rank or role, and the phone number or branch they used.

Then record how they reached you, what they asked or told you, any reference or report number, any deadline they set and exactly what you replied. Note whether you have proof, such as a screenshot or a letter.

Check who is contacting you

Not every caller is who they say they are, and real officers can be checked. The CCID at Bukit Aman is the PDRM unit that investigates mule-account cases. You can ask for the officer’s name, rank, station and report number, then check through official channels [f1].

Never give banking passwords or one-time codes to anyone. No real officer or bank needs them. Log the contact anyway, and check before you act on anything you are asked to do.

Record bank contacts too

Bank contacts matter as much as police ones. Note whether the bank describes the freeze as its own compliance hold or as an outside order, from the police or the Public Prosecutor. That one detail shapes your next step.

If you need to complain, Bank Negara Malaysia runs BNMLINK on 1-300-88-5465 for complaints and enquiries [f3]. Log any reference number you are given there too.

Why police contacts need extra care

Police contacts can carry legal weight. Under CPC section 116D, added in 2024, a police officer of Sergeant rank or above can freeze an account without a court order [f2]. Knowing which officer acted, and when, can matter later.

If an officer asks you to give a statement, log the request first, then prepare. You can ask a lawyer for advice before you attend.

Remember that Article 5(3) of the Federal Constitution gives you the right to consult and be defended by a lawyer of your choice [f4]. Bring your log to that conversation.

Why keep a contact log at all?

Memory fades and details blur, especially under stress. A log fixes each contact in writing while it is fresh: who called, when and what they said. It protects you from confusion later, feeds your case timeline and gives your lawyer an accurate record of how the investigation has gone.

What exactly should I record for each contact?

Note the date and time, who contacted you and their rank or role, the phone number or branch, how they reached you, and what they asked or told you. Record any reference or report number, any deadline and what you replied. Add whether you have a screenshot or letter that proves the contact.

How do I know a caller is really from the police?

Real officers can be checked. The CCID at Bukit Aman investigates these cases, and you can ask for the officer's name, rank, station and report number, then check through official channels. Never share banking passwords or one-time codes, because no real officer needs them. Log the call either way and ask for advice if unsure.

Should I give a statement before I have logged it?

Log the request first, then get legal advice. You can consult a lawyer first, and preparing helps you answer accurately. Record who asked, the date proposed and where. Your lawyer can review your log and help you prepare so your statement states the facts clearly.
