Bank Islam Froze Your Account: What Now
A Shariah account is frozen by the same law as any other, with one regulator difference to know.

Does a Shariah account make a freeze different?
No. You may worry that Shariah banking makes a frozen account harder to deal with. It does not. The freeze rules in Malaysia are federal and apply the same way to every bank, Islamic or conventional.
The one difference is the Act that Bank Islam falls under, and even that changes almost nothing in practice.
How you notice a Bank Islam freeze
You may find out only when something fails: a declined transfer, a “restricted” message in Bank Islam GO, or an ATM that will not pay out. The bank does not always send a letter first. [f4]
Treat the first failed transaction as a sign to check, not a glitch. Confirm the restriction in the app, then visit your branch with your IC to find out what kind of freeze it is.
IFSA and the federal freeze powers
In plain terms: conventional banks fall under the Financial Services Act, and Islamic banks like Bank Islam fall under the Islamic Financial Services Act. Islamic banks restrict accounts the same way as other banks: under their account terms and their duties under the Anti-Money Laundering Act 2001 and Bank Negara’s AML/CFT rules. [f3]
The powers that actually freeze an account sit in other laws, and they treat Islamic and conventional banks alike.
The police can freeze an account under CPC Section 116D during an investigation. [f2] An enforcement agency can order a freeze under AMLA section 44 where money is suspected to come from unlawful activity. [f1] A Shariah account changes none of this.
Contacting Bank Islam’s careline and branch
Start at the branch where you opened the account. Bring your IC, ask the officer to check the status, and get three answers:
- which authority ordered the freeze;
- the reference number;
- what the account can still do.
The 03-2690 0900 hotline can confirm the basics, but branch staff may be able to tell you more. [f4] If it is Bank Islam’s own hold, ask which documents will clear it and note a name to follow up with.
Documents for an Islamic-account holder
Compliance wants the same evidence as any bank, depending on how you use the account. For a salary account, that means payslips or an employer letter. For a business account, invoices and the matching contracts. For a one-off large deposit, the agreement behind it.
Bring originals to be checked and clear copies to keep on file. Hand in the full set at once: sending papers bit by bit can slow the review.
Where to complain if Bank Islam stalls
If you gave compliance what it asked for and the hold still drags on without explanation, complain to Bank Negara through BNMLINK at 1-300-88-5465. [f5] Bank Negara supervises Bank Islam under IFSA and takes complaints about how the bank treats its customers.
Keep a dated log of every contact, and see the full BNM complaint process.
A complaint to Bank Negara, and the Financial Markets Ombudsman Service (FMOS) after it, deal with how the bank behaves. Neither can lift a freeze ordered by the police or the Public Prosecutor.
What a lawyer can do, and your first steps
For a police or AMLA freeze, a lawyer can contact the investigating officer and apply to release money for rent, food and other essentials: in writing to the enforcement agency under s44A for an AMLA s44 freeze, or to the Sessions Court for a police s116D freeze. If you are charged, the lawyer can defend you.
For a compliance hold, a lawyer may be able to write to the bank for you. If you are unsure, start with finding legal help.
Right now, confirm the freeze in Bank Islam GO, visit your branch with your IC, and note the authority, the reference number and what still works. Read what to do now for the wider checklist.
If it turns out to be a police or AMLA order, get advice before you approach anyone. See how account freezes work for the full picture.

Does my account being Shariah-compliant change how the freeze works?
No. Shariah rules govern how the account earns and shares profit, not whether it can be frozen. AMLA, the Criminal Procedure Code and Bank Negara's AML/CFT rules apply to Islamic and conventional banks alike. Your Bank Islam account is frozen and released through the same process as any other.
What is the IFSA difference I keep hearing about?
Bank Negara supervises conventional banks under FSA 2013 and Islamic banks like Bank Islam under IFSA 2013. For a frozen account the difference is small: the freeze powers come from AMLA and the Criminal Procedure Code, not from the FSA or IFSA, so your steps and rights stay the same. Only the name of the Act changes.
How do I reach Bank Islam about a frozen account?
Go to your home branch with your IC, or call the hotline on 03-2690 0900. Branch staff may be able to tell you more than the phone line. Ask which authority ordered the freeze, the reference number and what the account can still do, and write the answers down.
Can a salary or business account at Bank Islam be frozen the same way?
Yes. Savings, salary or business account, the freeze powers are the same. What changes is the paperwork to explain the money: payslips for salary, invoices and contracts for business income. The account type does not change who can freeze it.
What if Bank Islam stops responding to me?
If you gave Bank Islam what it asked for and its own hold still drags on with no clear reason, complain to Bank Negara through BNMLINK at 1-300-88-5465. Bank Negara supervises Bank Islam under IFSA and takes complaints about it. This route is for the bank's own holds, not a police or AMLA freeze.
Should I get a lawyer for a Bank Islam freeze?
If the freeze came from the police or the Public Prosecutor, yes. A lawyer can contact the investigating officer, apply to release money for essentials (in writing to the enforcement agency under s44A for an AMLA s44 freeze, or to the Sessions Court for a police s116D freeze), and defend you if you are charged. For a plain compliance hold, a lawyer helps mainly when the bank will not give a clear timeline.
