Why the choice matters

A mule-account case can be serious. Under s424C, the most serious of the three sections, the penalty is 3 to 10 years in jail, or a fine of RM10,000 to RM150,000, or both [f3].

You get to choose your lawyer. Article 5(3) of the Federal Constitution gives you the right to be defended by a lawyer of your choice [f1].

Look for relevant experience

You do not need a lawyer with a narrow label. You need one with criminal defence experience who knows the mule-account sections, account freezes and the court steps.

Police detected 46,048 mule accounts in 2023 and 50,295 in 2024 [f4]. Ask any lawyer directly about their experience with similar cases before you pick one.

An experienced lawyer talks about stages, options and realistic outcomes, not big promises. If they can calmly explain what can happen next, that is a good sign.

Choose someone who explains clearly

A defence can run for a long time, and you need to follow what is happening.

Notice how the lawyer explains things at the first meeting. Do they use plain words, answer your questions and set out the steps? Or do you leave more confused than before?

A lawyer who explains well helps you make your own decisions at each stage.

Trust and professional standards

You will tell your lawyer sensitive things, so trust matters. Notice whether they listen carefully, take your situation seriously and treat you with respect.

The Malaysian Bar Council provides guidance on conduct and maintains professional standards for lawyers [f2]. A lawyer who takes those standards seriously is a safer choice.

Trust your own sense of whether someone is being straight with you. How they treat you at the first meeting can show how they will handle the case.

Warning signs to avoid

Be careful with anyone who promises a result, says they can fix things through connections, or pushes you to decide on the spot.

No honest lawyer can promise an outcome. Being vague about fees is another warning sign, as is refusing to explain what they can and cannot do.

Confidence is fine. Promises of a result are not.

Compare before you decide

For a serious case, speaking to more than one lawyer is reasonable. Compare experience, communication and fees on the same points.

Do not take too long, though. Some steps in a mule case are time-sensitive, so compare a few lawyers quickly rather than searching for weeks.

If you want help finding a criminal lawyer for your case, you can tell us on WhatsApp what has happened so far and ask to be referred.

After you choose

Once you decide, be open with your lawyer, follow their advice and raise any concerns directly. A lawyer can only defend you well if you give them the full picture.

Does the lawyer need to specialise in mule cases?

Relevant criminal defence experience matters more than a label. Look for a lawyer who knows the mule-account offences, account freezes and the court process. Ask about similar cases they have handled, and check that they can explain yours in plain words.

Is a more expensive lawyer always better?

No. Fees can reflect things like seniority and office costs, not how well a lawyer fits your case. Judge them on experience, clarity and how well they explain things, then weigh the fee. A lawyer you understand and trust, at a fee you can keep paying, can serve you better.

What warning signs should I watch for?

Be careful with anyone who promises a result, says they can fix things through connections, pushes you to decide on the spot, or is vague about fees. No honest lawyer can promise an outcome. Choose one who is clear about what they can and cannot do.

How many lawyers should I speak to?

Speaking to more than one is normal for a serious case. It lets you compare experience, communication and fees side by side. You have the right to choose your own lawyer, so do not feel pushed to sign with the first one you meet.
