Seeking Compensation for a Wrongful Freeze
A lifted freeze does not repay you on its own, so here is how compensation works.

Compensation is not automatic
A frozen account can leave you unable to pay rent, wages or business bills. If you believe the freeze was wrong, it is natural to want that loss paid back.
But there is no automatic payout and no fixed scheme. Knowing this early helps you avoid chasing money that may not come in the form you expect.
Having your money released is not compensation
You may think the end of a freeze means you will be compensated. Under AMLA 2001 section 52A, a seizure order lapses 18 months after it is made if the person is not charged or no prosecution starts [f1].
When that happens, your money is simply no longer held. Claiming for the loss the freeze caused is a separate step, and it does not happen on its own.
Easing the pressure while frozen
Before thinking about compensation, you may need money to live on. Section 44A of AMLA lets an account holder apply in writing to the enforcement agency that made a section 44 freeze to release funds for reasonable living or business expenses [f2].
This applies to a section 44 freeze. You apply in writing to the enforcement agency that issued it, and no court is involved. A lawyer can prepare the application and gather the documents that show what you need.
Where a loss claim comes from
Compensation for a wrongful freeze would come from a civil claim in court, not a government scheme. You would need to prove a real, measurable loss and a legal basis to recover it.
Courts have dealt with freeze time limits before. In Lim Hui Jin v CIMB Bank Bhd & Ors [2018], the Court of Appeal addressed the 12-month limit then in force (18 months since 1 March 2026) [f3]. But every claim depends on its own facts, and no outcome can be promised.
Money you could not reach during the freeze is different from money you actually lost. Stress is different again from a financial loss. A lawyer can tell you which of these the law may recognise.
Complaint channels, step by step
Not every problem needs a court claim. If your concern is how the bank handled the freeze, use the bank’s own complaint process first and keep its written replies.
If that does not settle it, Bank Negara Malaysia runs BNMLINK on 1-300-88-5465 as an official complaints channel [f4]. If the dispute is still not settled after the bank’s process, the Financial Markets Ombudsman Service (FMOS) can look at eligible cases [f5].
Collect proof of your loss
A claim or complaint is only as strong as your records. Keep the freeze notice, your bank statements, proof of missed payments, and anything showing income you could not reach.
Write a simple timeline: when the freeze started, what you could not pay, and what it cost you. The clearer your loss, the better a lawyer can tell you whether a claim is realistic [f3].
Keep receipts that link a cost to the freeze, such as a late-payment charge, a cancelled order or a lost supplier. Add to this file as things happen.
Why no one can promise you a payout
No honest adviser can tell you a payout is certain. It depends on the legal basis, the evidence and the facts of your freeze.
If it is a section 44 freeze, you can still apply to the freezing agency to release funds under section 44A and make a proper complaint, while a full loss claim is checked carefully before anything is filed [f2].
What to do, in order
First, deal with hardship by applying to release funds if the freeze is ongoing. Second, gather your proof of loss. Third, get advice on whether a complaint or a civil claim fits your facts.

Is there a fixed compensation scheme for a wrongful freeze?
No. Any compensation would come from a civil claim that proves your loss and a legal basis for it [f3]. It depends entirely on your facts, so no amount or outcome can be promised. A lawyer first checks whether a claim is realistic.
The freeze has lapsed. Do I get money for the trouble?
A seizure order that lapses after 18 months means your money is no longer held, not that compensation follows [f1]. Having your money released and claiming for losses during the freeze are two separate things. A loss claim needs proof of real loss and a legal basis.
What can I do while the account is still frozen?
For an AMLA section 44 freeze, you can apply in writing under section 44A to the agency that issued it to release money for reasonable living or business expenses [f2]. This eases hardship now, while the question of loss is looked at separately.
