BSN Froze Your Account: What to Do
A frozen BSN account can lock salary, pension, or subsidy credits, so here's how to act.

How do you find out your BSN account is frozen?
BSN is a government-linked savings bank, and some Malaysians receive a civil service salary, a pension or a government subsidy through it. So a BSN freeze is not only about savings. It can stop the very payments a household plans its month around.
You may find out only when something fails: the myBSN app shows restricted access, an ATM withdrawal is declined, or an expected transfer never arrives.
BSN does not always write to you first, especially when the police or the Public Prosecutor ordered the freeze. Take the first failed transaction as a sign to check, then ask BSN for a proper explanation.
What happens to salary, pension and subsidy payments?
A frozen account can still receive money while blocking your access to it. Your pay or aid may land in the account and just sit there, out of reach.
Do not try to move money out of the frozen account. If you already have another account in your own name that still works, you can ask the paying agency or your employer, in writing, to pay future income into it. Do not use anyone else’s account. Leave the frozen account alone while the freeze is dealt with.
Why does BSN freeze accounts?
Three things can cause it. Since the 2024 amendment to CPC section 116D, a police officer of Sergeant rank or above can freeze an account and block transactions at once, without a court order. [f2] The Public Prosecutor can direct BSN to freeze an account suspected of holding proceeds of unlawful activity under AMLA section 50(1). [f1]
The third is BSN’s own compliance review, which can start when your transactions look unusual compared with your normal activity. Knowing which one applies to you decides every step after that.
How to reach BSN
BSN’s Contact Centre is +603-2613 1900, with a toll-free line on 1-300-88-1900 for calls within Malaysia, and WhatsApp as another option. [f4] Visiting a branch with your IC may get you further, because branch staff may be able to tell you more than a phone agent.
Ask directly which authority ordered the freeze. If it is BSN’s own compliance team, ask what it needs from you to release it. If the police or the Public Prosecutor ordered it, staff may only confirm that a restriction exists.
Releasing money for essentials under section 44A
A freeze does not always mean everything stops. Where an enforcement agency froze the account under AMLA Section 44, section 44A lets you apply in writing to the enforcement agency to vary the order so reasonable living or business expenses can still be paid. [f5] This is a formal written application to the authority, not something BSN can approve on its own.
A lawyer prepares it with proof of your real costs, such as rent, utilities and essential bills. This gives a clear basis for releasing part of the money. It matters most for a household that relied on the frozen account for its monthly needs.
When to complain to Bank Negara
If you have chased BSN more than once about a compliance hold with no result, complain to Bank Negara through BNMLINK on 1-300-88-5465. [f6] Bank Negara supervises BSN and takes complaints about how it treats customers.
Keep a record of your branch visits, the officers you spoke to and any reference numbers, because it helps the complaint. A complaint works for a compliance hold, but it cannot override a freeze ordered by the police or under AMLA.
What a lawyer can do
For a police freeze under CPC Section 116D, a lawyer can apply to the Sessions Court to vary it. For an AMLA Section 44 freeze, a lawyer can contact the investigating officer, check the case status and, where it fits, make a written application to the agency under section 44A to release money for essentials.
An AMLA section 50 order lapses after 18 months if no charge follows (section 52A), and a section 44 freeze lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged. [f3]
For a BSN compliance hold, a lawyer can press for a clearer timeline when the review drags on.
Your first steps
- Check the myBSN app.
- Call or visit BSN with your IC. Confirm which authority ordered the freeze, and note the reference number and the officer’s name.

My salary or pension goes into BSN. Will it still arrive if the account is frozen?
It depends on the freeze. A full freeze blocks money coming in and going out. Some police freezes let certain credits, such as salary, keep arriving while withdrawals stay blocked. The money stays in the account but you cannot reach it, so ask your BSN branch exactly what the account can do before you count on any payment.
What if my subsidy or government aid was due to that account?
A frozen account can still receive a payment while blocking your access, so the aid may sit there untouched. If you need it for essentials, a freeze by an enforcement agency under AMLA Section 44 can be varied under section 44A, on written application to that agency, to release reasonable living costs. Check the type of freeze with BSN first, because that decides your options.
How do I reach BSN about a frozen account?
BSN's Contact Centre is +603-2613 1900, with a toll-free line on 1-300-88-1900, and WhatsApp is available too. Visiting a branch with your IC may get you further than a call, because branch staff may be able to tell you more. Ask which authority ordered the freeze and for a reference number.
How long will a BSN freeze last?
A BSN compliance hold can clear once BSN has the documents it needs. A police freeze under CPC section 116D lapses after 18 months if no charge is brought, and a Sessions Court can vary it earlier. An AMLA section 50 order lapses after 18 months if no charge is filed, and a section 44 freeze lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged.
Can I get living expenses released from a frozen BSN account?
If an enforcement agency froze the account under AMLA Section 44, section 44A lets you apply in writing to the enforcement agency to vary the order so reasonable living or business expenses can be paid. It is a formal written application, not an automatic release. A lawyer prepares it with proof of your real costs, such as rent, utilities and essential bills.
Should I get a lawyer for a BSN freeze?
If the police or the Public Prosecutor ordered it, a lawyer can contact the investigating officer and, where it fits, apply to vary the order for essentials. For a BSN compliance hold, a lawyer helps mainly when BSN still gives no clear timeline after you have sent what it asked for.
