What happens when EPF money lands in a frozen account
You applied for an EPF withdrawal the proper way through KWSP. It was approved and paid into your bank account. Then you found the account frozen and the money out of reach.
An EPF withdrawal is a government-regulated payout made through official channels. [f1] The freeze may well be about other transactions in the account. [f5] If so, your KWSP money simply landed in an account that was already flagged or under investigation.
If you are not sure why your account was frozen, start with our guide to account freezes. It explains who can freeze an account and under which law.
Your EPF money is not lost
A freeze blocks you from using the account. It does not take away the money inside. Your EPF withdrawal stays in the account until the freeze is dealt with.
The freeze covers the whole account, not single deposits. So your salary, savings and EPF payout are all blocked alike. A KWSP payout is easy to document.
An AMLA Section 44 freeze is an investigation tool. [f2] It holds the money while the authorities look into other transactions in the account. If those are cleared, the freeze can be lifted or varied.
Why EPF withdrawals get caught in a freeze
Sometimes an EPF payout simply arrives at the wrong time. For example, the account was already flagged for a suspicious transfer from someone else. Or the bank was already reviewing it when the payout came in.
Sometimes the EPF deposit itself adds to the flag. [f5] If your account usually sees small amounts and suddenly receives RM20,000 or RM50,000 from KWSP, the bank may flag it. A bank can look at the size of a deposit compared with your usual activity, not only where the money came from.
Either way, the withdrawal is a lawful payout approved by KWSP. The KWSP paperwork makes it easy to check.
Documents to gather
Your KWSP withdrawal approval letter. It confirms the approval, the amount, the date and the type of withdrawal, such as retirement, housing, education, medical or i-Sinar.
Your i-Akaun record. Log in to i-Akaun on the KWSP website and download the record of the payout. It shows the exact amount and the date KWSP sent the money to your bank.
Your bank statement. It shows the matching deposit, which appears with a KWSP reference number. Match the amount and date with the KWSP record to show a clear trail.
What to do now
Call your bank. Ask which authority ordered the freeze and for the investigation reference number. Ask which transactions caused it, because this helps your lawyer prepare the right response.
Download your KWSP documents now. Save the approval and payout history from i-Akaun, and keep printed copies.
Do not ask KWSP to reverse or redirect the payout. KWSP paid it correctly. The problem is your bank account, not KWSP.
Asking for the money to be released
If you need the EPF money for living costs, AMLA Section 44A lets you apply in writing to the enforcement agency to vary the freeze. [f3] This is a written application to the enforcement agency that froze the account, and a more senior officer decides it; it does not go to court.
The application sets out what you need the money for and shows the deposit is a KWSP payout.
A lawyer who handles frozen account cases can prepare this application for you. The facts are simple to explain: the money came from a government-regulated retirement fund, and you withdrew it for a stated purpose such as housing, medical bills or living costs.
How long the order can last
An AMLA Section 44 freeze lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged. Under AMLA Section 52A, a later seizure order lapses 18 months from its date if no one is charged. [f4]
A well-documented payout such as an EPF withdrawal gives your lawyer something concrete to put to the investigating officer when asking for the money to be released.

Why is my EPF withdrawal stuck in a frozen account?
The freeze may well have been caused by other transactions in your account, not by the EPF payout. Once an account is frozen, everything in it is blocked, including a KWSP payment. The EPF money is still in the account, but you cannot use it unless the freeze is lifted or varied.
Can KWSP get the money out of the frozen account for me?
No. KWSP paid your withdrawal correctly; the freeze is a banking and investigation matter. KWSP can give you a letter confirming the payout, which your lawyer can use as evidence. Only the authority that ordered the freeze can lift it.
Is my EPF money lost if the account stays frozen?
No. The withdrawal stays in the account. It is not taken away while the account is frozen. When the freeze is lifted or varied, you can use the money again.
How do I prove the deposit came from EPF?
Gather your KWSP withdrawal approval letter, the i-Akaun record of the payout and the bank statement showing the deposit. The deposit will show as a transfer from KWSP with a reference number. Together these show a clear trail from KWSP to your account.
Can I ask for my EPF money to be released?
Yes. If an enforcement agency froze the account under AMLA Section 44, Section 44A lets you make a written application to the enforcement agency to vary it. The application explains why you need the money and shows the deposit is a KWSP payout. The agency decides whether to vary the order.
How long will my account stay frozen?
An AMLA Section 44 freeze lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged. A later seizure order lapses 18 months from its date if no one is charged (Section 52A). A police freeze under CPC Section 116D lapses after 18 months if no prosecution starts. A lawyer can put your KWSP records forward early.
