Your Freelance Client's Payment Was Scam Money?
A client payment turned out to be scam proceeds, and now your freelance account is frozen.

Why one client payment can freeze your whole account
You did the work, sent the invoice and got paid, like any other freelance job. Later, the client’s money is traced to a scam, and your account is frozen or flagged because of it. [f1]
Under the Anti-Money Laundering Act 2001 (AMLA), the Public Prosecutor can order a freeze on an account suspected of holding crime money. One incoming payment is enough. [f1]
The police can also act at once. Under the 2024 amendments, an officer of Sergeant rank or above can freeze an account and block transactions without a court order. [f2]
The freeze does not separate your fee from the rest of the money in the account. Everything is locked while the source of that one payment is checked.
Could this happen to any freelancer?
Yes. Anyone, anywhere, can pay a freelancer straight into a bank account. Scammers sometimes pass stolen money through a freelance payment to put one more step between it and the victim.
It is hard to check where a client’s money came from before taking the job. Delivering a service and being paid the agreed rate is normal freelance work, not suspicious conduct.
The freeze is a precaution while investigators trace the money. It is not a finding against you. Your task now is to show, clearly and quickly, that the payment matched real work you delivered.
Your rights while the account is frozen
You are entitled to know which authority froze the account and the reference number of the order. Ask your bank for this. It may not be allowed to say more.
You can also ask for money to be released for essential costs. Under AMLA section 44A, you apply in writing to the enforcement agency, and a more senior officer decides. [f3] This matters when freelance work is your main or only income.
The freeze also has limits. An AMLA section 44 freeze lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged, and under section 52A a later seizure order lapses after 18 months if no charge follows. [f4]
What to do in the first 48 hours
Check the account on the police (PDRM) Semak Mule portal, which shows whether it has been flagged as a mule account, meaning an account used to move scam money. [f5] This is the quickest way to see what you are facing.
Gather everything about the job:
- the client’s brief or chat thread
- your invoice
- the delivered file or proof the work was done
- the payment notification
Stop taking new payments into the same account from clients you do not know until you understand what triggered the flag. More unexplained money coming in makes your position harder to explain later.
Proving the payment was for real work
Your strongest evidence is the work itself. A finished design file, a published article, a code repository or a recorded consultation call all show the money paid for a real service.
Compare the payment with your normal rate. A payment that is unusually large, split into odd amounts, or sent by someone who never discussed the job is harder to explain than a normal invoice.
Screenshots of your chats with the client count as evidence, even on WhatsApp or a platform’s own chat. Keep the whole thread and do not delete anything.
How a lawyer can help
A lawyer who handles mule account defence can get the freeze reference and the name of the authority from your bank. They can make the written section 44A application to the agency for your living costs. [f3] They can also put your evidence in order for the investigating officer.
Freelance evidence is often informal: chat logs, platform records, a single invoice. A lawyer can present it clearly and advise you before you give any statement to the police.

Can my whole account be frozen because of one client's payment?
Yes. If a client's payment is later traced to a scam, the investigating authority can freeze the whole account, not just that payment. [f1] The freeze looks at where the money came from, not at your part in the deal. Your strongest point is showing you delivered real work at a fair rate.
What if I had no idea the payment was connected to a scam?
What you knew matters to your position. What helps now is a clear record that the payment matched work you actually delivered, and a note of when you first learned of any problem.
Can I still accept payments from other clients while my account is frozen?
A freeze usually locks the whole account, so new payments may bounce or make the picture more confusing. It is safer to stop new client payments into that account until you know what the freeze covers. A lawyer can advise how to handle ongoing freelance income in the meantime.
How do I prove I actually did the work?
Keep the client's brief or chat thread, your invoice, the delivered file or proof of the service, and the payment confirmation. If the police froze the account, they can do so without a court order, so your records are what you bring to the investigating officer. [f2] Freelance work leaves a thin paper trail, so every chat message and file timestamp helps.
Will this affect my ability to work on freelance platforms in future?
A frozen bank account does not by itself affect your platform account. Withdrawals can get stuck, though, if the platform pays out to the same bank account. The Semak Mule portal tells you whether the account itself is flagged. [f5] A lawyer can help you deal with both.
How long before I get access to my freelance income again?
An AMLA section 44 freeze lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged, and a later seizure order lapses after 18 months if no charge is filed (section 52A). [f4] You can also apply in writing to the enforcement agency under section 44A to release money for living costs while the investigation goes on. [f3]
