The first hours after a Melaka account freeze

A frozen account feels like an emergency. The best first move is to stay calm and follow a short list of steps in order.

Acting in a panic, such as moving money, can turn a freeze that could be fixed into a bigger problem.

If you want the background first, read how account freezes work.

Do not move any money

This is the hardest rule when you are anxious: leave the money alone. Do not send the balance to a relative or to another account of your own.

Moving money after a freeze can look like hiding it, even if your reason is innocent. The safest thing is to touch nothing until you understand the order.

Find out which authority ordered the freeze

Under AMLA section 50(1), the Public Prosecutor can order a freeze. A police officer of Sergeant rank or above can also freeze an account under section 116D, with no court order [f1][f4].

Ask the bank in writing for the freeze reference and the authority’s name. The bank acts on an order, so it may be able to tell you where the order came from.

Put your papers together

Keep everything in one file: the freeze notice, any letters, your statements and a short timeline of what happened. Add proof of monthly costs such as rent, utilities and dependants.

This file does two jobs. It helps a lawyer understand your case quickly, and it is the evidence for any request to release money.

Check your details on Semak Mule

Check your account and phone number on the PDRM Semak Mule portal, which flags accounts linked to scams. Recent reports say more than 190,000 accounts had been flagged [f5].

If a scam is behind the freeze, report it to the National Scam Response Centre on 997, which can act urgently [f6].

A flag is not proof of guilt, but the account is under suspicion. If so, see mule account lawyer for Melaka.

Ask for living costs under section 44A

When the freeze came from an enforcement agency under AMLA section 44, section 44A lets you ask that agency, in writing, to release money for reasonable living or business costs [f3]. The decision is made by a more senior officer inside the agency, with no court hearing. Melaka households should show rent, bills and dependants on paper.

Approval is not automatic. Clear papers showing what you need, and why the amount is reasonable, give the request a better chance.

Keep the time limits in mind too [f2]. The freeze duration guide explains each time limit.

Melaka courts and getting a lawyer

The police directory lists IPK Melaka at Ayer Keroh Lama, Bukit Beruang, with district headquarters (IPD) for Melaka Tengah, Alor Gajah and Jasin [f7]. If an officer asks you to attend, ask which office it is and keep the notice.

The judiciary lists the Melaka High Court at Kompleks Mahkamah Melaka [f8]. For help with cost, the Bar Council has a Legal Aid Centre in Melaka at Hang Tuah Jaya [f9].

You do not need to travel first. Send a short WhatsApp message about what happened, and we can refer you to an independent law firm that can tell you which freeze applies and the sensible next step.

What should I do first if my Melaka account is frozen?

Stop moving money. Do not send the remaining balance to family or to another account, because that can look like hiding it. Then ask your bank in writing for the freeze reference and the authority behind it. Every later step depends on those two answers.

How do I find out who froze my account?

Ask the bank whether the freeze came from a Public Prosecutor's order under AMLA section 50(1) or a police freeze under Criminal Procedure Code section 116D [f1][f4]. The bank carries out the order, so it may be able to name the authority. That tells you where and how to respond.

Should I check Semak Mule myself?

Yes. The PDRM Semak Mule portal shows whether your account or phone number has been flagged. Recent reports say more than 190,000 accounts had been flagged [f5]. A flag is not proof of guilt, but it means your account is under suspicion, and a lawyer will plan your response differently.

Can I get money out for rent and food while the account is frozen?

Sometimes. If an enforcement agency froze the account under AMLA section 44, section 44A lets you apply in writing to that agency to release money for reasonable living or business costs [f3]. A more senior officer decides, and approval is not automatic. Papers showing your rent, bills and dependants make the request stronger.

How long can the freeze last?

A freeze by an enforcement agency under section 44 lasts up to 90 days unless a charge is brought. An order under section 50 lapses after 18 months if no one is charged (section 52A) [f2]. A section 116D police freeze lapses after 18 months if no one is prosecuted [f4]. Knowing the right deadline matters, because a lapsed order should not keep your account locked.

Which Melaka police office could ask me to come in?

The police directory lists IPK Melaka at Ayer Keroh Lama, Bukit Beruang, and district offices (IPD) for Melaka Tengah, Alor Gajah and Jasin [f7]. A notice should say which office is calling. Ask, and keep a copy before you attend.
