What the IO is
The investigating officer, or IO, is the police officer in charge of one case. The IO collects evidence, records statements, traces transactions and builds the file that may later go to a prosecutor.
The IO is not the judge and not the prosecutor. Their job is the investigation, nothing more.
Where the IO fits
In mule-account cases, the officer may work in the CCID (Commercial Crime Investigation Department, JSJK) at Bukit Aman. This is the PDRM unit that investigates these cases. [f1]
The IO may also be linked to a freeze on your account. Under the 2024 amendments, a police officer of Sergeant rank or above may freeze an account without a court order on suspicion it is linked to unlawful activity. [f3]
When the IO calls you in
Take any letter or message seriously, and keep the date and reference number. Do not ignore it, and do not rush in unprepared.
You can consult a lawyer first. Article 5(3) of the Federal Constitution gives you the right to consult and be defended by a lawyer of your choice. [f2] Knowing your account holder rights helps you walk in steadier.
Dealing with the IO
Your aim is to give an honest, accurate account and protect your rights. A lawyer can advise you on giving a statement and what to expect during questioning.
Keep your records in order, learn the investigation and court process, and plan your next steps calmly.

What does an investigating officer do?
The IO runs one case. They collect evidence, record statements, trace transactions and build the file that may go to the prosecutor. In mule-account cases the IO may work in the CCID. Before you deal with them, know your rights and, if you can, speak to a lawyer.
The IO wants me to come in, what should I do?
Take it seriously. Keep the letter or message and note the date and reference number. You can consult a lawyer before you attend, and a lawyer can advise you on giving a statement. Do not ignore the request, and do not turn up without preparing.
Can I bring a lawyer when dealing with the IO?
The Federal Constitution gives you the right to consult and be defended by a lawyer of your choice. That is not a general right to have the lawyer sit in during questioning, so ask a lawyer what applies to you. Advice before you attend helps you know what to expect and how to give an honest, accurate account.
