An Ampang deal that looks harmless
Picture someone in Ampang with an old savings account they no longer use. A stranger offers quick cash to “buy” or “rent” it, saying it is only for receiving business payments.
It feels like easy money for an account that is doing nothing. Months later the account is flagged, frozen and linked to transfers the owner never saw.
Selling or renting out an account can leave an ordinary Ampang resident named in a mule account case.
Why being paid does not make it lawful
The offences are federal, so they are the same in Ampang as anywhere else. Penal Code section 424B covers giving control of your own account to another person, and being paid for it does not make it legal [f1].
If the buyer then moved money through the account without a lawful purpose, section 424C can also come into play. It is the most serious of the three offences [f2].
A lawyer’s first job is to separate what you actually did from what the buyer did with the account.
How seriously these cases are treated
Mule accounts are a large enforcement area for police: they detected 46,048 in 2023 and 50,295 in 2024 [f3].
Investigators therefore take sold and rented accounts seriously, because they are a known way of moving criminal money. A rushed or defensive explanation can do harm.
Keep a documented record of how you were approached, and ask a lawyer to help you prepare before you speak to the police.
Ampang: police statement and first court date
A call may come from the Ampang Jaya police district, which is how the directory names it. [f7] Ask a lawyer before you go, and bring your ID, any notice, and your messages with the person who bought or borrowed the account.
Ampang has a Sessions and Magistrates court, so a first mention could be held there. [f6] The charge sheet names the court, and the prosecution decides.
Do not discuss the case with the buyer again. Pass their messages to a lawyer instead.
Your rights and where to get help
Under Article 5(3) of the Federal Constitution, an arrested person has the right to be defended by a lawyer of their choice [f4]. If you are arrested, you can ask for a lawyer. Before any police interview, you can also seek a lawyer’s advice.
Keep every message with the buyer and any proof of what you were told. If cost is a worry, the Legal Aid Department (Jabatan Bantuan Guaman) Selangor office may help if your income qualifies [f5]. The Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Selangor) is another option.
Read more in account holder rights and section 424B explained. For local context, see the Ampang location page and the mule account defence guide.
If the police have asked to see you, get advice before that appointment.
Legal aid for an Ampang mule case
The Legal Aid Department lists a Selangor office [f8], and the Bar Council’s Selangor Legal Aid Centre is in Shah Alam [f9]. They decide who qualifies.
You can also message us from Ampang and ask for a referral to an independent law firm. Sending documents by phone works.

I sold an account I no longer used. Isn't it mine to sell?
The account may be in your name, but giving control of it to someone else is exactly what section 424B covers, and being paid does not make it lawful [f1]. A lawyer helps you explain how you were approached and what you understood. What you knew and why you did it matter for your defence.
What if the buyer then moved scam money through it?
Transactions through an account without a lawful purpose fall under section 424C, the most serious of the three offences [f2]. That is why selling or renting an account is far riskier than it looks. Get advice early so the difference between what you did and what the buyer did is clearly recorded.
How common are these prosecutions?
Many are recorded. Police detected 46,048 mule accounts in 2023 and 50,295 in 2024. Investigators take sold and rented accounts seriously, so talk to a lawyer before you decide what to say.
Which court is nearest to Ampang?
The directory lists a Sessions and Magistrates court at Ampang, and High Courts at Shah Alam and Klang. [f6] It does not say which High Court takes Ampang cases. The prosecution decides where a charge is heard, so read the charge sheet.
