Why a frozen account hits retirees harder
For someone still working, a frozen account is stressful. For a retiree, it can be a crisis. Your bank account is probably where your pension, EPF withdrawals and fixed deposit interest all go, so a freeze stops all your income at once.
Health needs make it harder. Medicine, specialist visits and hospital bills cannot wait for a legal process to finish. AMLA allows an application to release money for essential living and medical costs. [f2]
If you are not sure why your account was frozen, our guide on understanding account freezes explains the common reasons.
What happens to EPF and pension payments
EPF pays withdrawals straight into your registered bank account. [f1] If that account is frozen, approved withdrawals cannot reach you. The money is not lost, but you cannot use it until the freeze ends or the payment goes elsewhere.
Contact EPF as soon as you can. Ask whether your monthly withdrawal can be paid into another bank account. If you have an account at another bank that is not frozen, this may be the quickest fix.
If your government pension is paid into the frozen account, you face the same problem. Ask the pension department about paying you another way. Your lawyer can also include pension money in a variation order application. Our guide on frozen salary options covers similar situations.
Getting money for medical costs
Medical costs are a clear reason to ask for a variation. AMLA Section 44A allows a written application to the enforcement agency for essential living expenses, which can include medical costs. [f2]
Prepare your medical evidence carefully. Collect recent prescriptions, hospital appointment letters, specialist referrals and any treatment plans. If you have a long-term condition that needs regular medicine, write down the monthly cost and what happens if you miss treatment.
The law allows reasonable living expenses for you and your family. [f3] Your lawyer should set out your age, your health and your immediate medical needs in the application. Our medical expenses guide explains this process in full.
What happens to your fixed deposits
If you keep savings in fixed deposits, note that when the account is frozen they cannot be withdrawn or renewed when they mature. [f5] The bank holds the money until the freeze is lifted or varied.
This can cost you. If a fixed deposit matures during the freeze and cannot be renewed, you may lose the interest rate you had. Your lawyer can include fixed deposits in the variation order application.
If you have fixed deposits at several banks, check whether the freeze covers all of them or only one bank. The wording of the freeze order decides which accounts you can still use. Knowing your rights as an account holder helps you ask the right questions.
Does your age make a difference?
Your age and health help show what living expenses are reasonable for you. [f3] A retiree with medical needs and no other income is in a different position from a younger person who still earns.
Your lawyer should set out your age and health in any variation application. Hospital records, a doctor’s letter about your condition and proof that you depend on the frozen money all show why the matter is urgent.
The freeze also has a time limit. Under AMLA, a freeze order lapses if no one is charged within 18 months, and no court can extend it. [f4] For a retiree every month counts, and an early variation may bring relief while the investigation goes on.
How retirees end up with frozen accounts
A retiree’s account can be frozen because of their own transactions, or because of what someone else did. A scam caller may have tricked you into sharing your account details.
A family member may have used your account for transfers you did not fully understand. Or someone may have sent money into your account without your knowledge.
In each case, you may be treated as a victim rather than a suspect. What matters is a clear record of what happened and who was involved. Save all messages, call logs and transaction histories, and a lawyer can put this evidence before the investigators.
If a family member or helper used your account, our guide on what to do now sets out the first steps.
How your family can help
You do not have to deal with this alone. Family, especially adult children, can support you through the process.
They can collect documents from the bank and EPF. They can come with you to meetings with a lawyer and to police interviews. They can also deal with companies about overdue bills.
They cannot act for you in court without a proper legal arrangement. If your health makes going to court hard, discuss this with your lawyer. You can find one through our finding legal help guide.

Will my EPF monthly withdrawal still come through?
EPF pays withdrawals straight into your registered bank account. If that account is frozen, the money cannot reach you. Ask EPF whether payments can go to an account that is not frozen. Your lawyer can also include EPF money in a variation order application.
Can I access money for my medical expenses?
Yes. If an enforcement agency froze the account under AMLA Section 44, you can apply in writing to that agency under Section 44A for a variation to cover medical costs. Medical costs can count as reasonable living expenses. Bring your medical records, prescriptions and hospital bills to support the application.
What happens to my fixed deposits during a freeze?
Fixed deposits in a frozen account cannot be withdrawn or renewed. If one matures during the freeze, the bank holds the money until the freeze is lifted or varied. Your lawyer can raise this in the variation application.
Does my age matter in the legal process?
The law allows money for reasonable living expenses, and your age and health help show what is reasonable for you. Your lawyer should set out your medical needs and your costs in the application.
I was scammed and my account was used without my knowledge. What now?
If someone tricked you into sharing account details or making transfers, that is part of your defence. Keep every piece of evidence: messages, call logs and transaction records. A lawyer can put this evidence before the investigators.
Can my children help manage this for me?
Yes. Your children or other family can collect documents, talk to your lawyer and come with you to meetings. They cannot make legal decisions for you unless you have given them proper legal authority, so ask your lawyer how to arrange this.
