Your Rights When a Bank Closes Your Account
Account closure is not a freeze, and knowing the difference tells you which channels can help.

Is a closure the same as a freeze?
If your bank says it is closing your account after a mule-account scare, it is easy to think of it as a freeze. They are different, and the difference decides where you can get help.
A freeze holds your money during an investigation, but the account still exists. A closure ends your relationship with the bank, because the bank now sees you as high risk.
For freezes, read how account freezes work.
Why a bank may close your account
Banks manage their own risk and can decide to stop serving a customer. After a mule-account scare, a bank may close an account even if you are never charged.
That can feel unfair, especially if you did nothing wrong on purpose. But the bank’s risk decision is not a finding that you broke the law.
Check what is behind the closure
Sometimes a closure follows a record you can check yourself. Anyone can use the PDRM Semak Mule portal to see if an account or phone number is flagged, and more than 190,000 accounts had been flagged as of 2024 to 2025 reporting. [f4]
If your details appear there, that may explain the bank’s caution. It also tells you whether the same problem may follow you to another bank.
Where to complain
Start with the bank’s own complaint process. Ask for its reasons in writing and keep every reply.
If that does not settle it, Bank Negara Malaysia supervises banks and runs BNMLINK on 1-300-88-5465 as an official complaints channel. [f1] Once the bank’s internal process is finished, the Financial Markets Ombudsman Service (FMOS) can take the complaint further. [f2]
Use these channels in that order and keep your documents at each step.
Your right to a lawyer if police are involved
A closure is a banking matter, but it may come alongside a police investigation. If you are questioned, Article 5(3) of the Federal Constitution gives you the right to consult and be defended by a lawyer of your choice. [f5]
You can ask for advice before you answer questions about the account.
When to bring in a lawyer
A lawyer helps most when the closure follows a mule scare or an investigation. They can check whether a flag or freeze is behind it, write your complaint clearly and take it through the right channels.
Ask about costs at the start. The Malaysian Bar Council issues guidance on solicitor-client costs and professional conduct, which helps you know what to expect. [f3]
To choose someone, read finding legal help and what a lawyer can do. If you are considering legal representation, request independent lawyer contact on WhatsApp with a brief, general message and no documents.
Getting your money and records out
Ask the bank how and when your remaining balance will be returned. Get the answer in writing so there is no dispute later.
Ask for your account statements and any letters about the closure. You may need them to open an account elsewhere, complain to a regulator, or show how the account was really used.
If the bank is slow or unclear about returning your balance, the official complaint channels can look at that too. Keep every request and reply.

Is a bank closing my account the same as a freeze?
No. A freeze holds your money during an investigation, but the account still exists. A closure ends your relationship with the bank. Banks can close accounts they see as high risk after a mule scare, even if no charge follows.
Can a bank close my account without explaining why?
Banks can end a customer relationship to manage their own risk, and may not explain fully. You can still ask for the reasons in writing, and for your money and records. If you think the closure is wrong, you can complain to Bank Negara Malaysia and later to the Financial Markets Ombudsman Service (FMOS).
Where do I complain about an unfair closure?
Start with the bank's own complaint process and ask for its reasons in writing. If that fails, contact Bank Negara Malaysia through BNMLINK. Once the bank's internal process is finished, FMOS can look at the dispute.
