CTOS and CCRIS Impact of a Frozen Account
A freeze is not a loan default, but it can still touch your credit record.

Will the freeze hurt my credit record?
One of the first fears after a freeze is what it does to your credit record. You may picture a permanent black mark on CTOS or CCRIS the moment the account is frozen.
The truth is more specific. A freeze and a credit default are two different things. The danger is that one can lead to the other.
For the basics of freezes first, read how account freezes work.
A freeze is not a credit default
A freeze stops money moving in your account while an investigation runs. It is not a record that you borrowed money and failed to repay it.
Credit reports track loans, cards and repayments. A freeze on your savings or current account is not a report that you defaulted. So the freeze on its own does not create a bad credit entry.
How a freeze can still reach your credit report
The risk is indirect. If the money for a loan instalment is stuck in the frozen account, the payment can bounce. A missed repayment is exactly what credit reports record.
Under AMLA section 52A, a seizure order lapses 18 months after it is made if you are not charged and no prosecution starts. [f1] But a missed payment in those months can still show on your record after the freeze ends.
So the aim is simple: do not let a bounced payment turn the freeze into a default.
Getting money released so you can keep paying
The law gives you a way. Under AMLA section 44A, you can make a written application to the agency that froze the account, asking it to release money for reasonable living or business costs. [f4]
A written application that lists your costs and attaches proof, sent early, gives the agency what it needs to look at your request.
A lawyer can prepare this application for you and send it before your next instalment is due.
The Semak Mule flag is separate
There is another record to know about. Anyone can check the PDRM Semak Mule portal to see if an account or phone number is flagged. More than 190,000 accounts had been flagged as of 2024 to 2025 reports. [f2]
This flag is not your credit score. It is a police record. But a bank may look at it when you apply for something new, so check whether your details are there.
Deal with the flag and your credit file as two separate problems.
If a bank records something unfairly
If you think a bank has recorded something wrongly, complain to the bank first, in writing, and keep copies.
If the bank does not fix it, Bank Negara Malaysia runs BNMLINK on 1-300-88-5465 as the official complaints channel. [f3] Bring documents showing the freeze, its dates and the payment you tried to make.
To understand how serious your case is, see the mule account defence overview. For first steps, read what to do now.
Keep a paper trail from day one
Your best protection is a record made as things happen. From the day of the freeze, keep the freeze reference, every bank letter, and the date of each payment you tried or could not make.
If you tell a lender your money is locked, do it in writing and save the reply. A dated message sent before the instalment was due is stronger evidence than a memory months later.
These records help in two ways. They support your application to release money, and they give you proof to correct an unfair entry later.

Does a frozen account by itself damage my credit score?
No. A freeze stops money moving during an investigation. It is not a record that you failed to repay a loan. The risk comes later, for example when a loan instalment bounces because the money for it is stuck in the frozen account.
Is a Semak Mule flag the same as a bad credit record?
No. A Semak Mule flag is a police record that an account or number was treated as suspect. A credit record shows how you handle loans and cards. They are separate, but a flag can still affect how a bank treats a new application, so it is worth checking.
How do I stop a freeze from causing a missed payment?
Act early. Tell each lender in writing that your account is frozen, and ask about options before the instalment is due. You can also make a written application under AMLA section 44A to the agency that froze the account, asking it to release money for reasonable living or business costs.
Who do I contact if a bank records something unfairly?
Start with the bank's own complaint process, in writing. If the bank does not fix it, Bank Negara Malaysia's BNMLINK is the official channel. Bring documents showing the freeze, its dates and the payment you tried to make.
