Why your data matters in a mule account case

A mule account investigation is mostly a check of records. Your bank statements, transaction history and personal details all shape how the case is seen.

That can feel invasive, especially if you did nothing wrong on purpose. Knowing what is looked at, and what protections you have, helps you stay calm.

What the investigation looks at

The main material is financial: how money moved through the account, when, and to whom. The ID details linked to the account holder sit alongside it.

In the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID, or JSJK) at Bukit Aman investigates these cases and collects the records. [f2]

Police can ask for certain transactions, certain dates, and how the account was opened and used. Knowing this helps you answer questions exactly, instead of saying too much out of worry.

What a Semak Mule flag means

You may first find out about a problem through Semak Mule. This public PDRM portal shows whether an account or phone number is flagged, and more than 190,000 accounts had been flagged as of 2024 and 2025 reports. [f1]

A flag is serious, but it is not a verdict. It means someone made a report or the police suspect the account. Being flagged does not mean you have been convicted.

Your rights over your own records

You can keep and ask for copies of your own bank records. As the case goes on, a lawyer can tell you what you can expect to see and what you must provide. [f3]

Do not assume you must give up passwords, open your phone for someone or hand over everything just because someone asks. Getting advice before you share more than needed is sensible protection, not being difficult.

If your account was wrongly flagged

Raise a wrong flag first with the bank that reported it or holds the account. Keep their written replies.

If the problem is how a bank handled your data or account, Bank Negara Malaysia runs BNMLINK on 1-300-88-5465 as the official complaints channel. [f4] Write down dates, names and reference numbers.

Protect your data from scammers

While the case is open, be careful who you share details with. Scammers can target worried account holders by pretending to be officers or helpers.

Check any caller through official channels before you share anything. Never send passwords or full card numbers to someone who contacted you. It is reasonable to check who you are really speaking to.

If a caller pushes you to act at once, will not let you check, or asks for a password, treat it as a warning sign.

Keep your own copy of every document in one place. That record protects you and helps the people handling your case. [f2]

What happens to what you tell a lawyer

Telling a lawyer about your case is different from telling a stranger. Lawyers must follow professional conduct rules on client information, and the Bar Council issues guidance on this. [f5]

Give your lawyer the full facts, including the awkward ones. Holding back only weakens the advice you get. [f3]

A lawyer can also tell you which requests from police or your bank you must follow, and help you answer them without giving away more than needed.
