No Further Action (NFA) Explained
What it means when a case ends in no further action, and what it leaves unresolved.

What NFA means
No further action, or NFA, means the authorities have decided not to proceed against you for now. In plain words, no charge is being brought on the matter as it stands.
The decision rests on the evidence available at the time. It is not a court verdict.
If you were drawn into a mule account investigation without doing wrong, NFA can be good news. Still, it helps to know exactly what it covers, because it does not settle everything.
Why a case can end in NFA
A case can close without a charge for several reasons. The evidence may be too weak, or your explanation may fit the facts.
In a criminal case, the prosecution must prove the charge beyond reasonable doubt [f1]. If the evidence cannot reach that standard, there may be no reason to go on.
Police detected 46,048 mule accounts in 2023 and 50,295 in 2024 [f2], and NFA is one way a case can end without going to court.
NFA is not an acquittal
An acquittal is a court ruling that you are not guilty. NFA is different: the case simply does not go forward, and no court rules on it.
For you, the effect is usually good, because no charge follows. But it is a decision not to prosecute, and the reasons can differ from case to case. A lawyer can explain what your particular NFA means.
Can it be reopened?
A case closed for now may not be closed for good. It depends on the reason for the decision, so ask a lawyer what your NFA means.
So keep your documents and records even after NFA. A clear record protects you if questions come up later.
Your right under Article 5(3) of the Federal Constitution to consult a lawyer does not end with an NFA [f4].
What NFA does not fix
NFA on the criminal side does not settle everything about your account. The freeze and the criminal case run separately.
An AMLA order has its own limit under section 52A: it lapses 18 months after it was made if no charge is brought [f3]. A section 44 freeze by an enforcement agency lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged. How and when money is released depends on which power froze the account.
So treat your account as a separate question. Check it rather than assume it is sorted.
Steps to take after an NFA
- Keep every document about the case, including the NFA decision if you get it in writing.
- Find out which power froze your account and on what date.
- Check whether any time limit has passed, and what step is needed to release the money.
If anything is unclear, a lawyer can check both the case and the account for you. It is better to confirm now than find a loose end months later.

What does no further action actually mean?
No further action (NFA) means the authorities have decided not to proceed against you for now. No charge is being brought on the matter as it stands. The decision is based on the evidence available at the time, not on a court ruling.
Does NFA mean I am declared innocent?
Not exactly. NFA means the case is not going forward; no court has ruled on guilt or innocence. In practice it can be good news, since no charge follows. But it is a decision not to prosecute, not a formal acquittal.
Can a case be reopened after NFA?
It may be, depending on the reason for the decision. Keep your documents and records even after NFA, and ask a lawyer what your particular decision means.
Does NFA automatically unfreeze my account?
Not automatically. The freeze and the criminal case run separately. An AMLA order lapses 18 months after it was made if no charge is brought, and a section 44 freeze lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged. How and when money is released depends on which power froze it, so check rather than assume.
