Fake Job Offer Froze Your Account
A fake job offer asked for your bank access, and now your first account is frozen.

How a fake job offer turns into a mule account problem
It can start on WhatsApp, Telegram or a job portal. The role is “remote admin”, “payment processing” or “part-time finance assistant”, with easy hours and quick pay.
You are then asked to open a new account, or use your own, to “receive company funds” or “process client payments”. Sometimes it is a “salary advance” you must pass part of on to someone else.
Once real money moves through your account this way, the authorities can treat it as an account suspected of holding crime money. [f1] That suspicion leads to the freeze, whether or not you understood what was happening.
If this is your first serious dealing with a bank, that makes it even more frightening.
What sections 424A, 424B and 424C cover
The Penal Code (Amendment) Act 2024 created three offences for mule account activity, meaning the use of bank accounts to move scam money. [f2]
- Section 424A: having or controlling someone else’s bank card or payment access without lawful authority.
- Section 424B: handing control of your own account to another person.
- Section 424C: making transactions through an account without a lawful purpose.
The penalties range from fines to several years in prison, depending on the section. Which section applies, if any, depends on what you did, and what you knew and why you did it matter to your defence, not just your name being on the account.
Is it a bank hold or a police freeze?
Ask your bank whether this is its own internal hold or a formal freeze by an enforcement authority. Under the 2024 amendment, a police officer of Sergeant rank or above can freeze an account and block transactions at once under section 116D, with no court order. [f3]
The answer decides who you deal with next and which rules apply.
Why what you knew matters
What you knew, and why you gave access, matter to your defence under the 2024 offences. [f2] A convincing offer, with an interview, a written offer or a contact claiming to be from HR, matters here.
Keep every message from the “employer”: how the job was described, what you were told the transfers were for, and any offer letter or onboarding papers. Your mule account defence is built on these details.
How to check your account status
You can check whether your account is flagged on the police (PDRM) Semak Mule portal; our first-hour steps explain how. [f4] More than 190,000 accounts have been flagged under this system, so you are not the only one.
Knowing your exact status, instead of guessing, helps you and a lawyer choose the next step.
Getting money you need released
A formal freeze does not have to shut you out of every ringgit. Under section 44A, you can apply in writing to the enforcement agency to release money for reasonable living costs, and a more senior officer decides. [f5] For a graduate, that can include rent, transport and study loan repayments.
A lawyer can put the application together with the right supporting papers. Our page on legal costs explains what that help usually involves.
Low-cost legal help while you have no income
If you have no savings for legal fees, that should not stop you getting advice. The Legal Aid Department may give representation at low or no cost to Malaysians who meet its income test. [f6] See also what a lawyer can do for you.
Ask about eligibility as early as you can, ideally before you give any formal statement to the police.
How a lawyer can help from here
A lawyer can go through your chats with the “employer” and tell you which section, if any, is being considered against you. They can advise you before your first police statement. If you need money released, they can make the written section 44A application to the agency and stay with you through the investigation.
Begin with an honest account of how the job offer reached you and what it asked you to do.

I did not know the job offer was fake. Does that matter?
Yes. What you knew, and why you did what you did, matter to your defence. [f2] If the offer looked like a real job, with an interview, an offer letter or an "HR" contact, that supports you.
I gave my bank card and login for 'account verification'. Am I now guilty of a crime?
Not automatically. Handing over access matters, but what you knew at the time and why you did it matter to your defence. It also matters whether you were misled into thinking it was a normal step in joining the company. Save the messages that asked for it, because they show you were deceived.
How do I check if my account has actually been flagged?
Check on the police (PDRM) Semak Mule portal, which shows whether an account carries a mule account flag. [f4] More than 190,000 accounts have been flagged under this system, so it is worth checking your own status early.
I need my first salary or loan repayment money and my account is frozen. Can I access anything?
If there is a formal freeze, section 44A lets you apply in writing to the enforcement agency to release money for reasonable living costs. [f5] Rent, transport and study loan repayments may count. A lawyer can prepare the application with you so it is made quickly.
I cannot afford a lawyer yet since I just graduated. What help is there?
The Legal Aid Department (Jabatan Bantuan Guaman) may give legal help at low or no cost to Malaysians who meet its income test. [f6] Ask about it early, ideally before you give a police statement, so you have more time to prepare.
Will this follow me when I apply for jobs or try to open new bank accounts later?
That depends on how the matter ends, and no one can promise a result in advance. What helps most is keeping proof of the deception now and getting legal advice before your first police statement. That way your side of the story is recorded correctly from the start.
