How long a freeze on a Shah Alam account can last
The hardest part of a frozen account is not knowing when it ends. An AMLA freeze is not permanent, and the law sets a clear maximum.
Knowing where you are in that period helps you plan. It also tells you when the freeze should end on its own.
The 18-month limit under section 52A
An AMLA freeze under section 50 lapses under section 52A if you are not charged within 18 months [f1]. This is the main rule to remember.
The Court of Appeal ruled on this limit in Lim Hui Jin v CIMB Bank [2018], when it was 12 months [f2]. The case confirms that a freeze has a time limit and is not permanent.
What happens if you are not charged
If the period ends without a charge, the freeze lapses under section 52A [f1]. If the bank still holds the money, keep your records ready and follow up.
A lawyer can check the status and write to the right office if the block continues past the limit. Our freeze duration guide explains these time limits in more detail.
How a police freeze differs
Not every freeze is an AMLA order. A police officer of Sergeant rank or above can freeze an account under CPC section 116D immediately, without a court order [f4].
A police freeze also lapses after 18 months without a charge, but counted from its own start date. So first find out which power was used. You can compare them in understanding account freezes.
Getting money released while you wait
Waiting out the full period with no access to your money is hard. Under AMLA section 44A, you can apply to vary a freeze so reasonable living or business expenses are released [f5]. You apply in writing to the enforcement agency that froze the account under section 44, and a more senior officer decides.
A lawyer can prepare the request with proof of your regular costs.
Which Shah Alam courts and police unit handle the case
The time limits are federal, but the courts are local. A Shah Alam case goes through the Selangor courts, and Shah Alam is one of two High Court locations in the state. Mule offences are tried in the Magistrates’ Court or Sessions Court, and the prosecution decides which.
Bukit Aman’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) coordinates mule investigations nationally, while the Selangor police contingent is based in Shah Alam.
What to send if you want help
You do not have to track the dates alone. Send a short message saying when your Shah Alam account was frozen and what the bank told you, and see what a lawyer can do.
Where a Shah Alam freeze may take you
If a freeze is argued in court, a Shah Alam matter is heard at the courts building on Persiaran Pegawai, Section 5. [f6] Selangor’s other High Court location is Klang.
A police freeze under section 116D is run by the police, so the officer named in your letter matters more than the town. IPK Selangor is at Persiaran Kayangan, Section 9, and Shah Alam has its own district police headquarters (IPD). [f7]
If the freeze has left you short of money for legal costs, the Legal Aid Department Selangor office [f9] and the Shah Alam legal aid centre [f8] are places to ask. A WhatsApp referral needs no travel to Shah Alam.

How long can an AMLA freeze on a Shah Alam account last?
What happens when the 18 months are up?
If you have not been charged within that time, the AMLA freeze lapses under section 52A [f1]. If the bank still holds the money after that, keep your records ready. A lawyer can check the status and write to the right office.
Does a police freeze run on the same clock?
Not exactly. A police freeze under CPC section 116D is made immediately on suspicion, without a court order [f4]. It also lapses after 18 months without a charge, but counted from its own start date. That is why you need to know which kind of freeze you have.
Can I get money out while the freeze runs?
Possibly. Under AMLA section 44A you can apply to vary a freeze so reasonable living or business expenses are released [f5]. You apply in writing to the agency that froze the account, and you need supporting records. A lawyer can make that application while the freeze continues.
