What does akaun keldai mean?
Akaun keldai is the Bahasa Malaysia term for a mule account, a bank account used to receive and move money linked to crime. The meaning is the same as the English term, so for the full picture see our mule account entry.
Literally, “keldai” means donkey. An akaun keldai is a “donkey account”, made to carry a load for someone else. The load is criminal money, and the donkey is the account holder who does the carrying while others keep the profit.
How is the term used in daily life?
You will hear “akaun keldai” in Malay-language news reports, police statements and bank warnings. It is the Malay label for the same thing as a mule account.
Recruiters may not use the word. They advertise easy part-time jobs, quick loans or online income and simply ask to use your account or online banking details. The label only appears afterwards, once the account is frozen and an investigation begins.
Why does the label carry legal weight?
Being called an akaun keldai is more than name-calling. It points to real offences under the Penal Code. Lending your own account to another person falls under s424B: a fine of RM10,000 to RM100,000, or jail of 1 to 7 years, or both [f1].
The term covers a large problem: police detected 46,048 mule accounts in 2023 and 50,295 in 2024 [f3]. The Semak Mule portal can confirm whether your account or phone number has been flagged [f2]. A lawyer can help you prepare before your first statement to the investigators.

What does akaun keldai mean literally?
Keldai means donkey in Malay, so akaun keldai reads as donkey account. It carries the same picture as the English mule account: an account that carries a load, here criminal money, for someone else. The everyday meaning and the legal meaning are the same.
Is akaun keldai different from a mule account?
No, they mean the same thing. Akaun keldai is the Malay term used in news reports, police notices and daily conversation. The offences and penalties under the Penal Code apply whichever word is used.
Why do scammers not use the word keldai when recruiting?
Recruiters may not say keldai openly. They advertise easy part-time work or fast loans and ask to use your account. The label appears later, in police reports and news, once the account is flagged. By then the holder may already face questioning under s424B.
