What does a credit score mean?

A credit score is a number that rates how likely you are to repay money you borrow. A rating agency works it out from your credit history. It is a summary, not the full record.

Lenders use the score as a quick guide. A higher score points to lower risk for the lender. A lower score may mean tighter terms or a declined application. It is only one of several things a lender looks at.

How is a credit score different from CCRIS?

The score is easy to confuse with CCRIS, but they are different. CCRIS is the detailed credit report held by Bank Negara Malaysia, the central bank that supervises financial institutions. [f1]

A credit score is one number a rating agency calculates from data like that. The record holds the detail and the score condenses it. For general questions about credit information, you can call BNMLINK on 1-300-88-5465. [f2]

Why is a frozen account a separate issue?

If you are here because your account was frozen, a credit score is probably not your real problem. A freeze responds to a suspected offence, not to how you repay loans.

Under CPC section 116D (added by the 2024 amendment), a police officer of Sergeant rank or above may freeze an account without a court order on suspicion of unlawful activity. [f3] That is a step in a criminal investigation, not a missed repayment. If your money is locked, a lawyer can explain the freeze and what you can do about it.

What is a credit score?

A credit score is a number that estimates how likely you are to repay money you borrow. A rating agency works it out from your credit history, such as loans and repayment patterns. Lenders use it as a quick summary when deciding whether to approve credit, and on what terms.

Is a credit score the same as CCRIS?

No. CCRIS is the detailed credit record held by Bank Negara Malaysia. A credit score is one number that a rating agency calculates from data like that. The record is the raw detail and the score is a summary of it. Lenders may look at both.

Does a frozen bank account lower my credit score?

A police or AMLA freeze is about a suspected offence, not about how you repay loans. It is not the same as defaulting on credit. If your account is frozen, the real issue is the freeze and your rights, so speak to a lawyer about the freeze itself.
