You rented out your account and now Petaling Jaya police have called

Your account is being investigated as a mule account in Petaling Jaya, and it may have started with an offer that seemed harmless. Someone paid you a little to use your account for a while, and you agreed.

This is one way ordinary people can end up in a mule account investigation. Nothing has been decided yet.

The offence behind a rented account

Being paid does not make it legal. Under the Penal Code, giving control of your own account to someone else is an offence in itself [f2]. Holding or controlling someone else’s account is a separate offence [f1].

These laws are the same across Malaysia. Your case will turn on what you knew, what you did and why, not on where you live.

Which court hears a Petaling Jaya case

Petaling Jaya has its own Sessions and Magistrates’ Court, which hears criminal cases from the area. [f6] Your account, bank branch and police report may all be in PJ, but a High Court stage would be heard in Shah Alam. [f9]

Mule offences are tried in the Magistrates’ Court or Sessions Court, and the prosecution decides which. Petaling Jaya is also a police district (IPD) under the Selangor contingent (IPK) in Shah Alam, so a call to give a statement could come from either office. [f7] The Shah Alam page explains the court side.

The records that show you were used

What you knew and why you did it matter to your defence, and you will need records to support it. Police detected 46,048 mule accounts in 2023 and 50,295 in 2024 [f4].

Your account may already be flagged on the PDRM Semak Mule portal, where more than 190,000 accounts are listed [f3]. Keep the chat where the offer was made, proof of what you were paid, and your account history.

A lawyer helps put these in order so your explanation is clear and backed by records. See what a lawyer can do.

If cost worries you, the Legal Aid Department (JBG) has a Selangor branch that helps people whose income qualifies. The Selangor Bar Committee and the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre in Shah Alam are also listed by the Malaysian Bar. [f8]

If you are arrested, Article 5(3) of the Federal Constitution gives you the right to choose your own lawyer [f5]. The mule account defence guide and section 424B explained go further.

I only rented out my account for extra cash. Is that still a crime?

It can be. Handing control of your own account to someone else falls under Penal Code section 424B, whatever reason you were given [f2]. Being paid does not make it lawful. What you understood and why you did it matter to your defence.

Which police office and court would my Petaling Jaya case involve?

Police may ask you to report to the Petaling Jaya district office (IPD) or the Selangor contingent in Shah Alam [f7]. If you are charged, Petaling Jaya has its own Sessions and Magistrates' Court [f6], and a High Court stage would be at Shah Alam [f9]. The prosecution decides which trial court hears a mule offence.

How did the police link me to a scam I never touched?

A victim may report a loss, the money trail leads to your account, and the account is flagged, sometimes on the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Semak Mule portal [f3]. A flag means an investigation, not a conviction.

Should I explain everything to the officer straight away?

Get advice first. If you are arrested, Article 5(3) of the Federal Constitution gives you the right to consult a lawyer of your choice [f5]. A rushed statement can make an honest story read badly on paper.

What can a lawyer do at this stage?

A lawyer can advise you before questioning, collect the chats and bank records that show how your account was really used, and speak to the investigating officer for you. What happens during the investigation can shape the case, so early help counts.
