Which court hears a Petaling Jaya case?
Petaling Jaya has its own Sessions and Magistrates’ Court, which hears criminal cases from the area. [f6] The High Court nearest to PJ sits at Shah Alam. [f9]
The prosecution decides whether a charge is heard in the Magistrates’ Court or the Sessions Court.

Which laws can freeze your account?
The power to freeze an account is national. Under the Anti-Money Laundering Act 2001 (AMLA) section 50, the Public Prosecutor can order a freeze on an account suspected of holding money from crime. [f1]
Separately, under the 2024 amendments, a police officer of Sergeant rank or above can freeze an account without a court order under Criminal Procedure Code section 116D. [f4]
If the account is suspected of being used as a mule account, a Penal Code charge may follow. One example is section 424A, for possessing or controlling someone else’s account. [f3] These rules are the same in Petaling Jaya as anywhere else.
Paying for rent and food while frozen
A frozen account can leave you without money to live on. If an enforcement agency froze it, section 44A of AMLA lets you apply in writing to that agency to release money for reasonable living or business costs. [f2]
A police freeze under section 116D is different: you apply to the Sessions Court, and a lawyer can prepare either application.
Police offices around PJ
Petaling Jaya is a police district (IPD) under the Selangor contingent (IPK), whose headquarters is in Shah Alam. [f7] If you are called to give a statement, the notice should say which office to go to.
Get advice before you go. What you say early can shape the whole investigation, and if you are arrested you have the right to consult a lawyer.
Where to get affordable advice near PJ
The Legal Aid Department (JBG) helps people within its income limits and has a Selangor branch. [f5] The Selangor Bar Committee and the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre in Shah Alam are also listed by the Malaysian Bar. [f8]
Either can explain your position. If you then need a private lawyer, what a lawyer can do explains how one can help.
What to do first
Leave the account alone and do not contact the investigating officer before you get advice. Gather your freeze reference number and every letter or message about it.
You do not need to travel to ask for help. A WhatsApp message is enough to be referred to an independent law firm.

Which court hears my Petaling Jaya case?
Is the freeze law softer or stricter in PJ?
Neither. AMLA, Criminal Procedure Code section 116D and the Penal Code mule-account offences apply the same across Malaysia. Petaling Jaya only changes the practical route: the Selangor courts, the Petaling Jaya police district and the legal aid offices in Selangor.
Can I unfreeze money for rent while my PJ case runs?
Sometimes. If an enforcement agency froze the account under AMLA, section 44A lets you apply in writing to that agency to release money for reasonable living or business costs [f2]. A police freeze under section 116D is different: you apply to the Sessions Court. A lawyer can prepare the application with documents that show your real needs.
Which police office would call me in?
It could be the Petaling Jaya district police (IPD), or the Selangor contingent (IPK) in Shah Alam [f7]. The notice should say where to report. Commercial crime cases also fall under the national Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK).
Where can PJ residents get affordable legal advice?
The Legal Aid Department (JBG) has a Selangor branch, and the Selangor Bar Committee and the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre in Shah Alam are listed by the Malaysian Bar [f8]. Each can explain your position before you decide on a private lawyer.
