Finding out why your Petaling Jaya account was frozen
A freeze feels random when you do not know the cause, but there is a reason behind it that you can look into. Before you do anything else, find out what triggered it.
Two quick checks can tell you a lot: what your bank can say, and what the Semak Mule portal shows. You can do both today.
What the Semak Mule portal shows
The Semak Mule portal shows whether your account or phone number has been flagged as a mule. Reports from 2024 to 2025 say more than 190,000 accounts had been flagged [f1].
A flag does not mean you are guilty. It means your account was named in a report, and you will need to explain your transactions clearly.
From a scam report to a frozen account
Some freezes start with a victim’s report. The NSRC hotline 997 takes scam reports and can set off an urgent freeze while the money is still moving [f2].
Once a report names your account, a block can follow quickly. This makes the freeze a step in an investigation, not a final verdict on you.
AMLA order or police freeze?
The reason also tells you which law was used. Under AMLA section 50, the Public Prosecutor can order a freeze on money suspected to come from crime [f3].
Separately, a police officer of Sergeant rank or above can freeze an account under CPC section 116D, with no court order [f4]. Each one has a different way to ask for a release. Compare them in our guide to understanding account freezes.
The PJ police district and courts
The freeze laws are federal, but the offices are local. Petaling Jaya is a police district (IPD) under the Selangor contingent (IPK), whose headquarters is in Shah Alam. [f7] Mule-account cases are investigated by the commercial crime department of the Royal Malaysia Police (JSJK). [f5]
If a charge follows, Petaling Jaya has its own Sessions and Magistrates’ Court. [f6] The nearest High Court is at Shah Alam. [f9] Our first-hour actions page covers what to do straight away.
Affordable help near PJ
If cost worries you, the Legal Aid Department (JBG) has a Selangor branch, and the Selangor Bar Committee and the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre in Shah Alam are listed by the Malaysian Bar. [f8] You do not need to travel to ask us: a WhatsApp message is enough.
Getting help with the next step
You do not need to have worked everything out first. A lawyer can read what your bank and Semak Mule showed, confirm which power was used, and prepare your explanation.
Send a short message about your PJ account and what your checks showed. We can refer you to a lawyer who can tell you what to do next.

How can I find out why my PJ account was frozen?
Start with two checks. Ask your bank for the reason and reference number for the block. Then check your account and phone number on the Semak Mule portal to see if they are flagged [f1]. Together these can show whether a report or an official order is behind the freeze.
What does a Semak Mule flag actually mean?
It means someone reported your account or number in connection with a scam, and the police recorded it [f1]. A flag is not a conviction. It shows your account was named in a report, and that you will need to explain your transactions.
Why was my account frozen so quickly?
Where in PJ would I be asked to report to the police?
The freeze laws are federal, but the office is local. Petaling Jaya is a police district (IPD) under the Selangor contingent (IPK), which is based in Shah Alam [f7]. Your notice should say which office to go to. If a charge follows, the case may be heard at the PJ Sessions or Magistrates' Court [f6].
Can a lawyer help me understand the reason for the freeze?
Yes. A lawyer can help you get and read what the bank and the portal show, work out which freeze power was used, and prepare papers that explain your account. That is safer than guessing, and it helps you avoid a rushed statement before you understand your position.
