Why online sellers get flagged

If you sell on Shopee, Lazada, TikTok Shop or another marketplace, your bank account sees a very particular kind of traffic. Dozens or hundreds of small payments arrive every day from different people around Malaysia. Platform payouts land as lump sums every few days, and refunds create money going back out.

To you, this is normal business. To a bank’s automatic monitoring system, it looks very like a mule account. [f1] Banks must file Suspicious Transaction Reports when they see unusual patterns, and frequent small transfers from many unrelated senders can be a trigger.

It does not mean you did anything wrong. It means the system flagged a pattern. Read how banks flag accounts to see why this happened.

Your platform records are your best evidence

Online sellers have one big advantage when an account is frozen: records. Every sale on Shopee, Lazada or TikTok Shop is logged. [f5] Your seller dashboard holds your order history, buyer details, payout dates and delivery confirmations.

Download these records now, without waiting for a lawyer to ask. Export your seller transaction reports for the last 12 months.

Save screenshots of your shop profile, seller rating and product listings. Keep the tracking records from your couriers.

These records link each “suspicious” bank payment to a real product sold to a real buyer. Shown to investigators, they turn a worrying pattern into clear proof of genuine trade. Our source of funds guide explains which evidence matters most.

What happens to your shop

A frozen bank account does not close your online shop, but it causes a chain of problems. Platform payouts cannot reach the frozen account, and you cannot pay suppliers for new stock. Your cash stops while orders keep coming in.

Contact your platform’s seller support. Explain that you have a temporary banking problem and ask what payout options you have.

Do not ask a business partner or family member to receive your shop money in their account. Moving money without legal advice can cause new problems.

Building your case as a seller

The authorities can freeze an account suspected of receiving money from crime, even if the owner knew nothing about it. [f2] For an online seller, the defence is to show that every payment matches a real sale.

Start with a timeline that matches each bank payment to a platform order. For every flagged deposit, show the order number, buyer, product and delivery confirmation. Matching them one to one helps.

Gather your SSM business registration if you have one. Collect supplier invoices, stock receipts and courier contracts. The more papers you have linking money in to goods out, the stronger your position.

Keeping your business going during the freeze

How long a freeze lasts depends on which law was used. An AMLA Section 44 freeze lapses after 90 days unless you are charged, and a Section 50 order lapses after 18 months without a charge. [f4]

Go through your options with a lawyer. A variation of the freeze may let certain business payments continue, such as supplier bills, warehouse rent and courier fees.

Keep your shop open even if you cannot fill new orders straight away. Pausing is better than closing, because you keep your seller rating and customer reviews. Read about how long freezes last so you can plan.

How to avoid future flags

Once your account is unfrozen, take steps to lower the risk of another flag. [f3] The most useful step is to open a separate business account and register your business with SSM.

A business account receiving platform payouts is expected to have many transactions. Banks monitor business accounts differently, so a pattern that sets off an alert on a personal account may be normal on a business account.

Keep your personal and business money apart. Use your personal account only for personal spending, and send every platform payout to the business account. That makes your history easier to explain if questions come up again.

Ask a lawyer about your rights as an account holder and how to protect your business from here.

Why would a bank freeze a genuine online seller's account?

Banks watch transaction patterns, not types of business. A seller receiving dozens of small payments a day from different people looks like mule account activity to the bank's system. The bank files a Suspicious Transaction Report, and the authorities may freeze the account while they investigate.

Can my Shopee or Lazada records help unfreeze my account?

Yes. Your seller dashboard, transaction history, payout reports and order records are useful proof of genuine business income. Download and keep them now. Your lawyer can show them to investigators to prove the pattern matches real online sales.

What happens to my pending orders and shop reputation?

A frozen bank account does not close your online shop. But if your payout account is frozen, the platform may hold your earnings. Contact the platform's seller support, explain the banking problem and ask about other payout options. Keeping your shop open may protect your seller rating.

Should I register my business to stop this happening again?

A registered business with its own business account may be less likely to set off alerts meant for personal accounts. SSM registration, a business bank account and proper invoices create a paper trail that separates business income from suspicious personal transfers.

How long will my account stay frozen?

It depends on which law was used. An AMLA Section 44 freeze lapses after 90 days unless you are charged, and a Section 50 order lapses after 18 months without a charge [f4]. Clear platform records can help when you ask for the freeze to be varied or lifted.

Can I use another account to receive payments while mine is frozen?

Do not use someone else's account, and do not open a new account to move money while yours is frozen. Ask your lawyer first. A lawyer can read the order and tell you whether a variation of the freeze can cover business payments.
