Why Overseas Transfers Get Flagged
Malaysian banks must watch international transfers for money laundering. [f1] When money crosses the border, the bank checks the amount, the country, how often you send, and whether it fits your usual activity.
A transfer outside your normal pattern can lead to a Suspicious Transaction Report (STR). That does not mean you did anything wrong. It means the bank’s system saw the transfer as unusual and reported it for a closer look.
If you are not sure why your account was frozen, our guide to account freezes explains who can order a freeze and under which law.
Common Reasons for Flagged Transfers
Some genuine transfers get flagged: money sent to family in countries seen as higher risk, freelance payments from abroad in uneven amounts, and one large payment for study fees, medical care or property overseas.
What they share is that the bank cannot see the purpose from the transfer data alone. [f5] It sees a large sum crossing the border and files a report, as BNM rules require.
Your transfer may be entirely genuine. The flag only means the bank needs more information to confirm it.
How the Freeze Works
After an STR, the authorities may freeze the account under AMLA section 44. [f2] The freeze blocks withdrawals, transfers and payments. Depending on the order, money may still come in, but nothing can go out.
The freeze is there for the investigation, not as a punishment. It holds the money while the authorities check whether the transfer was unlawful. For a genuine transfer, the right papers can help.
An AMLA section 44 freeze lapses after 90 days unless you are charged. Under AMLA section 52A, a later seizure or section 50 order lapses if no one is charged within 18 months. [f4]
Showing Where the Money Came From
To clear an overseas transfer freeze, you need to prove the source of funds. That means papers showing where the money came from and why it was sent or received.
For money sent to family: Bring ID documents that show how you are related to the person who received it. Add proof of what the money was for, such as medical bills, school fees or rent. If you send money to them regularly, include records of earlier transfers.
For freelance or business payments: Collect invoices, contracts, emails about the work and payment receipts. Records from Upwork, Fiverr or similar platforms also help. Bank statements showing similar payments over time make your case stronger.
For one large transfer: Bring the papers behind it, such as a property sale agreement, a university offer letter or a hospital bill.
What to Do Right Now
Ask your bank which authority ordered the freeze and get the investigation reference number. Write down the name and contact details of the bank officer handling it.
Collect every paper linked to the flagged transfer and put them in date order, so a lawyer can go through them quickly. Do not delete any messages about the transfer, even casual WhatsApp chats about what the money was for.
Do not move money between your other accounts in unusual ways. Keep your normal banking going through accounts that are not frozen. Unusual activity during an investigation can raise new flags.
Asking for Money to Be Released
If you need money for daily costs, AMLA section 44A lets you make a written application to the enforcement agency that froze the account. [f3] You set out your monthly costs, your dependants and what you owe. A more senior officer decides, and can release part of the money for rent, food, bills and other basics.
A lawyer who handles frozen account cases can prepare this application for you. It works best when it shows both the genuine purpose of the transfer and why you need the money.
Why Clear Papers Help Your Case
A genuine overseas transfer can leave a clear paper trail. You know who sent the money, who received it, and why. That is the kind of evidence these investigations look for.
When a lawyer sets out your papers clearly, the investigating officer can see what the transfer was for. Sending the evidence early gives the officer more time to review it.

Why did my overseas transfer trigger an account freeze?
Banks must watch cross-border transfers for money laundering. A large or frequent transfer, a transfer the bank treats as higher risk, or one with no clear papers can lead to a Suspicious Transaction Report. The freeze holds the money while the bank or the authorities check what the transfer was for.
I sent money to my family abroad. Is that illegal?
No. Sending money to family overseas is legal. The bank flagged it because it could not see the purpose straight away. Papers showing the family link and the reason for the transfer can clear this up.
What documents do I need to prove my transfer is legitimate?
Papers that show what the transfer was for. For family support, bring ID showing the relationship and proof of what the money paid for. For freelance work, bring invoices and contracts. For business payments, bring purchase orders and messages with the supplier.
How long will my account stay frozen?
It depends on the order. An AMLA section 44 freeze lapses after 90 days unless you are charged. Under section 52A, a later seizure or section 50 order lapses if no one is charged within 18 months [f4]. A lawyer can give the authorities clear papers and ask for an earlier review.
Can I still receive my salary while my account is frozen?
Ask your bank whether your salary can still be paid into the frozen account. You cannot take money out. Under AMLA section 44A you can make a written application to the enforcement agency that froze it. A more senior officer decides whether to release money for rent, food and bills.
Should I use a money changer instead of my bank for overseas transfers?
It will not help you avoid checks. Licensed money changers and remittance companies follow the same anti-money laundering rules. Whatever channel you use, keep a record of every transfer.
Will this affect my ability to send money overseas in the future?
Once the freeze is lifted and the case is closed, your account works as before. Keeping a record of who received each overseas transfer and why makes a future flag easier to clear.
