Retiree's Savings Account Frozen?
A trusted request or a scam left your pension or savings account frozen, and you need it resolved.

How does a retiree’s account end up frozen?
A retiree’s account can end up frozen in two ways. Someone you trusted asked you to receive or pass on money through your account: a relative, an old friend, a neighbour or someone claiming official authority. Or you were the target of a scam and money linked to it moved through your account. [f1]
Both can end the same way. The bank or the police flag the account, and it is frozen while the matter is checked. A freeze does not by itself mean you did something wrong on purpose.
If you have looked after your money carefully for decades, finding that account frozen can feel unfair.
What if you were only helping someone you trust?
Scammers, and sometimes relatives who were misled themselves, ask an older account holder to receive a transfer and pass it on. They may call it a small, simple favour. If the request came from someone you knew, you may have had no reason to suspect anything.
If this is what happened, write down how the request was made, who made it and what they said the money was for. This account, in your own words, becomes an important part of your defence.
What does the law say?
Under the 2024 amendments, a police officer of Sergeant rank or above can freeze an account and block transactions at once under Section 116D. No court order is needed first. [f2] That is why a freeze can arrive suddenly, with little warning.
The law does not treat every account holder the same. What you knew, and why you moved the money, matter to your defence.
Can you get money released for medicine and daily costs?
You do not have to go months without your own money. If the freeze is an AMLA section 44 order, Section 44A lets you apply in writing to the agency that froze the account to release money for reasonable living costs. [f3] For a retiree, that includes medicine, groceries, utility bills and rent.
A lawyer can prepare a clear application backed by medical receipts, prescriptions or utility bills. Good supporting papers make the request easier for the officers to assess.
How long can the freeze last?
Under AMLA, the Anti-Money Laundering Act, a section 44 freeze ends after 90 days unless you are charged. Under Section 52A, a later seizure or Section 50 order lapses after 18 months if no one is charged. [f4]
A police freeze under Section 116D lapses after 18 months if no prosecution is started. A clear, honest explanation from you early on gives the authorities what they need to review your case.
What if you were the one scammed?
If you realise you were deceived and the money is part of a scam, call the National Scam Response Centre on 997 straight away. [f5] A report can trigger an urgent freeze to stop the money moving further.
Reporting quickly also creates an official record that you reported the scam as a victim.
Who can help you with the bank and the paperwork?
It is perfectly reasonable to bring an adult child, another family member or a trusted friend to deal with the bank, the police and the paperwork. Having someone beside you for calls and meetings can make it less stressful.
If cost is a worry, the Legal Aid Department may give legal help at low or no cost to Malaysians who meet its income criteria. [f6] Ask about it early, because people living on a fixed pension may qualify.
How can a lawyer and your family work together?
A lawyer can speak to the bank or the investigating officer for you, at a pace that suits you. If you urgently need money for daily costs, the lawyer can prepare the Section 44A application. Your family is welcome to join these conversations.
If you or your parent is in this situation, send a short message describing what happened. A lawyer can then explain the options in plain words.

Why would a retiree's pension account ever get frozen?
It can happen in two ways. Someone you trusted, such as a relative, an old friend or a person claiming to be an officer, asked you to receive or pass on money through your account. Or you were the target of a scam and money linked to it passed through your account. [f1] Either way, a freeze does not by itself mean you did anything wrong.
I was only trying to help someone I trust. Am I in trouble?
Not automatically. What you knew, and why you moved the money, matter to your defence. If you honestly thought you were doing a family member or friend an ordinary favour, explain that clearly and early.
I need money for my medication and daily expenses. Can I get any released?
You can ask. If the freeze is an AMLA section 44 order, Section 44A lets you apply in writing to the agency that froze the account to release money for reasonable living costs, such as medicine, food and household bills. [f3] A lawyer can prepare the application with the right supporting documents.

I do not understand banking or legal forms well. Who can help me through this?
You do not have to do this alone. An adult child or another family member can sit with you for calls and paperwork, and a lawyer can explain each step in plain words. The Legal Aid Department also may give help at low or no cost if your income qualifies. [f6]
I think I was scammed myself. What should I do?
Call the National Scam Response Centre on 997 straight away. A report there can trigger an urgent freeze to stop the money moving further. [f5] Reporting quickly also creates an official record that you reported the scam as a victim.
