Food Stall Owner's Account Frozen?
Your bank account was frozen after depositing daily cash sales from your food business.

Why food stall cash deposits get flagged
A warung or food stall often runs on cash. Customers pay in notes and coins, and each day’s takings may go to the bank. [f2] Many hawkers bank their takings in a personal account.
The trouble is the bank’s monitoring. Banks must flag cash deposits that do not fit what the account holder told the bank about themselves. [f1] If your account is a personal savings account but large amounts of cash come in every day, the system sees a pattern it cannot explain.
The bank does not know you run a food stall. It only sees unexplained cash coming into an account that was not opened for business. That gap is what sets off the alert.
How the freeze happens
When the system flags your account, the bank can send a Suspicious Transaction Report (STR) to Bank Negara Malaysia. You are not told about it, because the law does not allow the bank to tell you.
If the authorities decide to investigate, they can freeze your account under AMLA Section 44. All the money in it is locked. You cannot withdraw, deposit or transfer until the freeze is lifted or the investigation ends.
Banks also watch for “structuring”, which means splitting one large deposit into several smaller ones. [f3] If you bank three smaller amounts a day instead of one larger one, the system may read it as an attempt to stay under reporting limits.
That can make things look worse, even if you just banked your takings at different times.
What the freeze does to your business
A frozen account means you cannot pay for tomorrow’s supplies. Market runs, gas refills, stall rent and staff wages all come from that account. Every day of the freeze hurts the business.
You buy fresh ingredients every day. Your cash flow is counted in hours, not weeks. Miss a day of supplies and you lose a day of income.
When your lawyer applies to release part of the money, the application can explain that your living depends on daily working capital.
Your rights during the freeze
You have rights as an account holder. A freeze is a temporary step for the investigation, not a punishment.
You can ask which authority ordered the freeze. You can have a lawyer. You can apply to release part of the money for essential living and business costs. [f5]
For an AMLA Section 44 freeze, that is a written application (under Section 44A) to the agency that froze the account.
No one is saying your stall income is illegal. The investigation needs to check where the money comes from. Once you show that, your lawyer has a clear case to put to the authority.
Building your case with what you have
If you do not keep formal accounts, you may still have more evidence than you think. [f4]
Stall rental agreement or receipts. These prove you run a food business at a set place, whether you rent from the council, a private owner or a food court.
Supplier receipts. Receipts from the wet market, wholesaler or grocery shop show you buy ingredients regularly. They match the money you deposit.
Photos of your stall. Pictures of your warung, menu board, cooking setup and customers show a real working business. Take them now if you do not have any.
Utility bills or licence. Electricity or water bills, or a hawker licence from the local council, confirm your business.
Statements from people who know you. Regular customers, neighbouring stall owners and your suppliers can confirm you run a genuine food business.
What to do now
Speak to a lawyer who handles business account freezes. Explain that you run a food stall and your account is frozen.
Gather all the evidence you have. Informal records count. Collect rental receipts, supplier invoices, photos and anything else about your stall. Your lawyer can turn them into a source-of-funds submission.
Note the date and call your bank. Write down when you found the freeze. Ask the bank which authority ordered it, so your lawyer can apply to the right one.
Keep the stall running. If you can find other money for supplies, keep trading. A business that is still open when the freeze ends is in a better position than one that has closed.
How a lawyer helps a food stall owner
Your lawyer prepares a submission showing the investigating authority that your cash deposits are business income. It links your daily sales to your daily deposits, using whatever records you have.
For hawkers without formal books, a lawyer can present rental papers, supplier receipts, photos and witness statements as one clear picture of a cash business. Clear evidence helps the authority understand your deposits.
Your lawyer can also apply to release part of the money so you can keep buying supplies and paying staff while the investigation goes on. [f5]
Avoiding another freeze
Once your account is unfrozen, ask your bank whether a business account under your SSM registration would suit you, and tell the bank you run a food stall. Keep simple daily sales records, even a notebook with dates and totals.
When the bank knows the account is for a food business, its system can expect your deposit pattern. A few records now can save a lot of trouble later.

Why was my food stall account frozen?
Banks flag accounts that receive large, regular cash deposits that do not fit the account holder's profile. If your account is a personal one but takes in thousands in cash each day, the bank's system treats it as suspicious. This is a monitoring step, not a criminal charge.
I deposit cash every day. Is that suspicious?
Daily cash deposits are normal for a food business, but the bank may not know you run a stall. Without a business account or a declaration, your deposits look like cash with no explanation. A lawyer can present your business records to explain the pattern.
I have no formal business records. Can I still get my account unfrozen?
Informal records can still help. Supplier receipts, your stall rental agreement, photos of your stall and statements from customers can all support your case. A lawyer can put what you have into a source-of-funds submission.
Can I still buy supplies during the freeze?
Not from the frozen account; it blocks all transactions until the freeze is lifted. But a lawyer can apply to release part of the money for essential costs like supplies and rent. Showing that your livelihood depends on the stall supports that application.
How long will the freeze last?
A freeze under AMLA Section 44 lasts up to 90 days unless you are charged. Some end sooner once proper documents are given. How fast depends on how quickly you provide evidence and how the authority responds.
Will I get in trouble for depositing my stall's cash?
Depositing money your business earned is not illegal. The freeze is a step to check where the money came from. If you show the deposits come from your food stall, the freeze may be lifted.
Should I stop depositing and keep cash at home instead?
No. Suddenly stopping deposits can look like you are hiding something. Keep running your business as normal and ask your lawyer how to handle banking during the investigation.
