What is an account restriction?
An account restriction is when a bank limits certain features but keeps the account open. A common example is blocking outgoing transfers or online payments, while deposits and balance checks still work. It sits between a short review and a full closure.
The limit is targeted, not total. The account still exists, but you cannot use it the usual way until the limit is lifted or the bank’s concern is settled.
How is it different from a hold or a termination?
These three get mixed up, so here they are side by side:
- A compliance hold is a temporary pause while the bank reviews activity.
- A restriction keeps the account open but blocks specific features.
- A termination closes the account for good.
A restriction is narrower than a hold and far less final than a termination. It can also overlap with police action. Under the 2024 CPC amendment, a police officer of Sergeant rank or above can block transactions at once without a court order, which can look like a restriction from your side [f1].
What can a restriction stop?
Depending on what the bank sets, a restriction can stop transfers, card use or online banking. By itself it does not close the account or take the money away.
If your account or phone number is flagged on the PDRM Semak Mule portal, that flag can be behind the restriction [f3]. Ask the bank in writing for the reason and which documents would help. If you get no clear reply, you can escalate through BNMLINK on 1-300-88-5465 [f2].
If you think police are behind it, a lawyer can check the legal basis and what can be done about it.

Is a restriction the same as a frozen account?
Not exactly. A restriction blocks certain features, such as outgoing transfers, while other functions may still work. A full freeze locks the whole account. If a restriction stops you reaching your money in practice, though, it can feel the same.
Why would my account be restricted?
A bank may restrict features after a compliance review, a report about the account, or a flag on a checking system. If your account or phone number is on the PDRM Semak Mule portal, that can lead to a restriction. Ask the bank in writing what the reason is.
How do I get a restriction lifted?
Ask the bank in writing for the reason and what it needs from you. Send any documents that show where the money came from. If you get no clear answer, you can escalate through BNMLINK. If a police freeze is involved, a lawyer can check the legal basis.
